Our Readers Write Climate Right For Anti-Smut Crackdown To The Editor: Do we citizens of Lower Township want another Denville. .y.J .. in our community? Denville is a small, quaint town'in the hills ol Morris County. Two weeks ago law enforcement officials had to close down Denville's Adult Book Store. Seems more than selling books, etc.. was the business taking place there Then* was an upstairs room, u-re too math to mention here, was an everyday oc irence. Not tcruse scare words but even evidence of persons with AIDS was apparent, obviously active customers. Far from selling books and videos. It was an obvious "pleasure palace " We can only ask. how did a quiet place like Denville gel involved with such pornography? Maybe in cities like New York and Philadelphia the clientele that these establishments attract can be absorbed and not be too visible, but can we. a small town, absorb these people? • WE AKK \OTTAI.KI\c; about the person who wants to buy Playboy and Penthouse, although I don't know why (it's degrading to women » They can buy them already We are talking about the people who come to buy and indulge in more "sophisticated" pornography. That's what we don't \Yant Denville is a prime example What about Woodbridge? There they had to fumigate an adult book store Have you ever heard of Barnes and No(ID. NO [l : See another letter or> next page.) ble being fumigated'" Da we realize what we are talking about? Do we want that for Lower Township? These establishments bring transients to the area to utilize the serv ves ottered S ou can be sure the local citizens of Denville were not sufficient to support an adult IxHik store The clientele came from all over DO \\ K W YNT to encourage strangers to come to Lower Township and threaten the safety of women and children? U*r$ not forget the civil rights ol the majorit\ while we are so concerned with the rights of a minority who wish to purvey this smut The climate is right now for tough laws against this kind of business, and we should take advantage ol thai new thinking and come down hard against pornography The country as a whole is taking a turn loa less permissive at titude We can see the damage this permissiveness has created: an increse in crime, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, and child abuse. The majority now see it's time for a change So congratulations to the new ijiembers of the Com munity Review Board Yours is an important and vital responsibility The decisions you make today will lay the groundwork for the future ROSEMARY FERRIS Cape May Beach ■ I Do you have an opinion on Ms subject ? * PROVE rr AlsJT" SO. JOE I " 6 Years of Jeopardy To The Editor: I would like to take this time to express sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mayor Mike Voll. members of township committee, and Kathy Meers for their hard work and determination in obtaining a grant for citywater lines for the residents of Swainton. Appreciation also-to Ruth and Harry Bakely. Sam Kelly. and all of my other neighbors whose concern and loud voices made it all possible. For the pasl several years I have lived in fear of the strong possibility that our water might be contaminated with toxins, and therefore I have been carrying bottled water from parents' homes for every reason but bathing. What a hardship that has been. , ASIDE FROM OXYGEN', water is a basic need of life, and to the residents of Swainlon. this most precious need has been jeopardized for almost six years I have been very weary wondering if residents of such a small com munity were important enough to our local officials. It is obvious that our state officials could care less about us I sincerely hope that no one's Jife or unborn life has been or will be affected with illness while the DEP and stale officials sit around "studying" the problem arffl wasting our money doing so. I have no thanks to them, but as neighbors we can thank each other and our elected township officials You will always have my support SUSAN SKABROOK Swainton

Share Holidays With Recruits I To The Editor: Operation Fireside is going forward to its fifth year Thanksgiving and Christmas 1985 [ The Coast Guard Training Center program, combined I with American Red Cross Cape May County Chapter. ! plans to invite our local families to participate again as they have so graciously done in past years to host the new [ recruits. We have been able to place approximately 1.000 [ recruits during that time with almost 400 families, with I enormously happy results for everyone concerned. [ Capt. Jon Uithol commanding officer of the training I center, and the training officers have found the program a | good thing for morale and otherwise, especially for the f recruits who are ablete^articipate. These are usually the recruits who have successfully entered their fifth week of training and are well on their way to graduate and become full-time rated Coast Guardsmen. THESE YOUNG men and women have completed four weeks of arduous and rigid programming with no familycontacts. except letters, no phone calls to sweethearts, very little sleep, and. alas, no chocolate bars. The only exception is. if confined to the base dispensary, for medical treatment, the Red Cross volunteer visits with some treats in hand and spends a little time chatting, listening to those who feel the need of a friendly ear. or just want to see a civilian for a change. The real world seems so far away by this time. We welcome invitations to share your holiday dinner and warmth of family hospitality for two or more recruits. Please call me. Gertrude Reiss, 884-1587. If no answer try again, especially after 6 p.m for more details Your guest can be called for at the Coast Guard Base Chapel at 12 p.m and returned by 8 p.m for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day celebrations. And. for all you good people who have helped us in the past and perhaps cannot do so this year, we wish to thank you again for all you have done We could not have made it without you GERTRUDE M. Congratulations , Phil, Sir

By JOE ZELNIK The mail has backed up. forcing me to use this column to reply. T R of Nuinmy How has the county reacted to your re cent simple solutions for complex problems'.' Answer: I m batting 500 The Grange Restaurant and Fare Free Transportation are on the move But my county eredit card proposal proved impractical, and the 1 1 1 -story reptile house at Historic Cold Spring Village flopped because of Lower Township's 35-foot height limit But I have an even better proposal which I should be able to reveal next week G. H of Goshen How about Phil Matalucci winning four million bucks' Answer: Just remember what the Bible says about how difficult it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven, where you and I will be rewarded. FH YNKLY. I can think of no one more deserving than Phil, for whom I have always had the highest personal regard and professional admiration. And if I have ever written anything that suggested otherwise. I'd like to apologize at this time And if Phil really intends to use his $4 million as a down payment on this paper. I want to assure him of my continued support and undivided loyalty -toward' -everything and everyone he believes in J. F. of Kunbles Beach: Did you really live in Cape May. and were evicted by city officials'* Answer: Yes.. I did live in Cape May. hut I left voluntarily because I got sick of the extended season. I like to take my morning shower and go outside for the paper nude, letting the wind dry me In Cape May. I was always bumping into people peering around looking for historic homes H. S. of Petersburg: What ever happened to your dog track proposal for the snafued Cape Motorsport sportscar racing facility in Woodbine0 Answer: The delay is the county's fault. Stuck with a dozen monkeys that flunked as Ocean Drive bridge toll collectors, it's having great difficulty training them to be jockeys. Frankly. I hope they work out because the alter-

native is:' monkeyburgers at the Landing Strip Restaurant, if and when it opens L. T. OF DEL IIAVEN: How's it going with Avalon's contest for a slogan for the sign motorists see as thev leave town"' Answer With a Nov. 18 deadline, debacle threatens. So far there's only one entry. It came from Arden Hand and reads "Dissatisfied0 Try Stone Harbor Next TimAl P O. of Wildwood: I'rjrh waitress and as good wjeaiher and smart promotion extends the tourist season. I'm having difficulty knowing who are, the high-tipping tourists , I'm supposed to smile at and who are the cheap locals I can spill spaghetti sauce on Answer: This a problem for all of us who deal with the public I have found a foolproof method: Tourist drape their sweaters around their necks and look preppy; locals tie them around their waists and look fat. L. B of Rio Grande: Why are your papers doing so well? Answer: Our market research shows that people who used to boast about how expensive their car was or how exclusive their clothes now prefer bragging about what a good buy they got Being free, this newspaper is clearly the best bargain in the county. . I). K. OF VILLAS: It doesn't seem as though you're probing any crucial issues lately? Answer: Investigations take time. I'm working on two Middle Township scandals right now. First, how did flim sy "Reelect Leusner" signs survive Hurricane Gloria when 100-year-old trees didn't" Second, why is the Middle Township High School athletic field located across the parkway from the Middle Township High School? The WWW (West Wildwood Widows) Club: Will we be seeing you around this Halloween" Answer: Trick or treating is my favorite fun. the one day I can receive without giving. Thanks to the usual confusion over when to observe Halloween. I can go trick or treating for two solid days. I'm starting today on Edinburgh Road in northernmost Ocean City and concluding tomorrow night on Chrystal Avenue in Cape May Point. You'll recognize me; I'll be the gray-haired Rambo
