Alcoholism Meets Focus on Women
COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Council on Alcoholism held a planning meeting in the Department of Health Bldg. at Crest Haven Complex last Friday to discuss alcoholrelated women's issues such as fetal alcohol syndrome and effects of alcohol on women and female youth. The council is hoping to co-sponsor three seminars this year on these topics with "groups such as the A.A.U.W.. Family Planning, O.B. CLinic members, child study teams, and social services personnel like the Welfare Board. \ THE EXPERIENCED Organizers attending are Carol Kasiander and Lucille Cannava. both from the Division of Alcoholism. The harmful effects of alcohol intake in pregnan
cy in those critical first eight to 10 weeks include; spontaneous abortions or stillbirths, reduced birth weight, reduced size and head circumference at birth, growth deficiency (even though nutrition is adequate), poor sucking and poor eating habits, failure to thrive, eye and ear anomalies, cardiac defects, poor coordination, irritability, hyperactivity and mental retardation "WOMEN alcoholics don't hide— they are hidden. Scorned by society as having a moral weakness, thsylface a double stigma, alcoholism and unlady like behavior" quotes Dr. Morrison, M.D., f rom American Medical News of Mar. 8. Dr Richard Tarter, M.D., states, primarily for physicians, that one needs to "become aware that alcoholism and drug dependence is very common. Then accept the fact alcoholism is a disease, not a sign of craziness or moral weakness. Finally that there is hope". These seminars, which will be offered for credits 0 such as Nursing CEU, CAC< Certification and Recertification ICME's for physicians and Substance Abuse Certification, will, it is hoped, increase, doctor, nurse, hospital personnel, child development personnel and counseliogMersonnel for all countySme and school agencies as well as the general public's knowledge of alcoholism and alcohol effects on women. f ITS NOVEMBER A IT'S GETTING COLDER You can count on Grace 522-2421 GRRCE OiL CO. 101 East Sth St North Wildwood N | ^ 08260 J
