Cape Needs Foster Families

RIO GRANDE - The need for foster homes, particularly those providing minority foster care, is at an all-time high, says Mrs.

Bernice H. Gordon, chairperson of the county Foster Care Recruitment Task Force. Foster parents must be at least 18, in good physical health, and display a healthy mental attitude and ability to cope with the demands of parenting, says Gordon. PRE-PLACEMENT training, a mandatory program, is provided to prepare families for the demands of temporary care, Gordon says, and because of changes in the objectives of foster care as promulgated by the Division of Youth and Family

Services and the Department of Human Services. "In a nutshell," says Chuck Hiddemen, of the county DYFS, "we are looking for families able to make a commitment to be a meaningful part of a child's lifetime." FOSTER FAMILIES are needed for children of all ages, Gordon says, but the greatest need at present is for homes for minority children, sibling groups, and children 12 to 16.
