SPORTS by SUE McKinley County Enjoys 50-50 Week on the Gridiron
Football was 50 percent prosperous in Cape May County last week with two winners and two losers. The Middle Township Panthers seemed to have gotten out of their slump with two wins in a row. This time, Pleasantville was the Panther picnic as Middle downed the Greyhounds 32-15. Pleasantville started it off as Al Vingon carried the football 48 yards for a touchdown. Rob Moody kicked the extra point and the Greyhounds were up 7-0. f THE PANTHERS used
the strength of Mark Hindle and the quickness of Eddie Bryan to tally two touchdowns on 10 and oneyard explosions and to take the lead for the rest of the game. IT WAS THE fourth quarter that gave the fans their money's worth. Bob Hicks made special deliveries to John Francis and Dexter Parker for 40 and 20-yard scores. Mark Edwards carried 25 times for 143 yards and also made a four-yard scoot into the end zone. Ricks added the extra points for Middle. The Greyhounds made a final effort with a Moody 30-yard touchdown pass to Don Brooks and a two-point conversion play to Vingon, but the Panther lead was untouchable. OCEAN CITY WAS the other winner on the gridiron with a 14-0 romp over Bridget on. The Raiders were led by senior halfback Bob Krokenberger. who leaped the line for two shortdistance touchdowns. After a quiet first half with a 0-0 score, Bridgeton came out hungry in the third. After a long strenuous journey to the five-yard line for a third down, the Bulldogs were unable to penetrate the Raider wgJl. OceanH^y's first assault on the Bulldogs was a Brown scoot up the middle for 7 and 9 yards to the 25. Krokenberger ran three years to the first and 14. Krokenberger made three more runs, ending in a three-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with the extra kick. AS THE FOURTH quarter began. Raider Vince Iannace took the ball to the 26, Krokenberger carried it seven more, and , Craig Swennes left it on the 11 -yard line. After two tries, Krokenberger made a fouryard touchdown. Chris Gunnels added another extra point kick and the game was decided at 14-0. The two losses in the county were dealt to Lower Cape May and Wildwood. Bud McGrath was the leading scorer with three goals as Pat MacFarlane, Bob Helverson. Jeff Lewis and Ed McClain each added a boot to the collection. (Earlier in the week, the Crusaders made their first step towards securing the title by defeating Absegami.) THE CONTEST was a McFarlane feature as the Crusader star took advantage of a new position. Being moved from the centerhalfback position to the forward line gave MacFarlane a green light on the goal cage. With four minutes left in the first period. MacFarlane booted a Catholic first score.
Bud McGrath delivered a pass to MacFarlane in the second period for another goal, MacFarlane's 15th of the season. Crusader goalie Matt Cosenza defended his cage for a scoreless third period. Andy Weiss gave the Crusaders their final net off a rebound that he banked off the crossbar into the goal. With 30 seconds left to play, Absegami's Chris Jenny hit on a corner kick for their only score and a 3-1 final.
