This new series will be to explain some common diagnostic tests used by physicians in their offices. Today we will consider the urine culture. The idea behind a urine culture is to find out whether you have a bacterial infection of the urine. Since bacteria grow happily in a warm place, by placing some urine onto a nice jelly-like substance and keeping it in a special warming oven, the doctor gives any bacteria in the urine a chance to multiply like crazy. This process takes about three days to multiple the tiny bacteria into colonies large enough to identify. BACTERIAL colonies itoye their own unique colshapes and smells The urine culture plate after three days will either showno growth, or colonies of bacteria that will have sprung up wherever the urine was spread. Your doctor has been trained to know what the different colors, patterns and smells of bacteria are like and s/he will be able to decide which one is affecting you. AT THE SAME time the urine is smeared on the culture plate. 4lttle an-

tibiotic disks are scattered on it. Each has a code number for a different antibiotic. When the bacteria colonies grow they will avoid or die near any of the disks of antibiotic that would be effective against them. Any antibiotics that the bacteria are already accustomed to (resistant), they will still grow near. The doctor uses this information to decide which antibiotic to give you. S/he will want to pick one which obviously kills off the bacteria. HOWEVER/, there is a broad range of antibiotics with varying side effects and s/he will try to select the most gentle, vet effective one for your bacteria. A major mistake some patients make is to decide to start taking on antibiotic they had in their medicine cabinet rather than going to the doctor for treatment. This is a mistake because the bacteria might have become resistant to that antibiotic. THE WHOLE time the person is taking it the infection is getting worse and the kidneys can become terribly damaged For this reason, urinary tract infections deserve t he thoughtful treatment of a physician. Multiple urinary infections raise many questions as to how you are getting them. There might be a correctable physical cause, where once again your physician's input will be very important.
