Britons may be able to quote Shakespeare and ruf: fie their feathers in pride at his famous sayings such as: 'Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows." "Better three hours too soon than a minute too late " "Everyone can master grief but he that has it." "Fashion wears out more apparel than the Man " "All that glitters is not gold " These sayings are appropriate to their place within the famous dramas and as comments on the human race and life itself. IN THE COURSE of our hislory we have several men whose sayings, like Shakespeare's, are witty and true and eminently quotable Mark Twain is one of those great American authors whose works have supplied some of the most quoted American phrases. Some of Mark Twain's , comments on human nature: "Man is the only animal
that blushes or needs to." (Pudd'nhead Wilson ) "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits." (Ibid.) "Let us be thankful for fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed." (Ibid.) ' All the modern inconveniences." (Life on the Mississippi) "The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot." (What is Man?) MARK TWAIN also made some pertinent observations about politics and politicians that are refreshing to bring up at this, our most political time of year. They remain as pertinent today as they were at the turn of the century. "Its name is Public Opinion . It is held in reverence. It settles everything. Some think it is the voice of God." (Europe Elsewhere. Cornpone Opinion) "In statemanship get the formalities right, never mind about the moralities." (Pudd'nhead Wilson) "It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is not a distinctly native American criminal class except Congress." (Ibid ) AS PART of a literary celebration of Mark Twain's contribution to American literature.
