Little 2-year-old Tons White is a very fortunate young lad. Tony was the child who was reported missing on election eve I The call to the W'ildwood Police Department created one of the largest and most concentrated searches in recent memory Fortunately, young Tony was found in the "nick of time" curled up in the bottom shelf of his parents' refrigerator Barely breathing. Tony was transported to Burdette Tomlin by the W'ildwood Rescue Department A very lucky child, indeed What was striking about this entire situation was the rapid and professional mobilization of our Island's police/fire/rescue units. WITHIN MINUTES of the call, local units responded from W'ildwood. Wildwood Crest, and North W'ildwood It was feared that Tony White had | wandered off in the dark I and strayed towards the in- ) land waterway. , Units were dispatched from Middle Township. The County Sheriff's Department responded with trained personnel and a bloodhound The U.S. Coast Guard promptly launched a helicopter to assist the search from a [ position of aerial advantage Dozens of trained, volunteer fire rescue personnel also assisted. TIIE MOBILIZATION was dramatic and well coordinated. I just happened to be driving by the . scene as the search was in progress and the lack of confusion and the purposeful direction were apy parent. As the father of two "small ones". I found the entire operation heartening. All too often, we take
our protection and safety services for granted. But. after a few minutes of witnessing the professional abilities of our collective public safety services. it is obvious we are all very well served. All departments that participated in the search for young Tony White should be congratulated for a job very well performed ! W II I L E W E A R E discussing community effort and .child safety, it is probably as good a time as any to mention the Second Annual Halloween Party hosted by Wildwood Councilman Curtis Miller and coordinated by his daughter. Linda. Last year. Miller began the tradition with the help of friends and this year the event was continued with well over 200 children in attendance. Personally. Halloween is not m> favorite time of the year. In fact, I am a regular Scrooge during this October season. It has to do with the increasing numbers of Halloweeners that fall victim to thoughtless and contemptible people who seem to find some perverse pleasure in altering the condition of the treats so readily accepted by trick or treaters. Fortunately. we're all not Scrooges, and events like the Second Annual Halloween Party take place, properly supervised and well directed TIIE INTENTION of the event is to keep kids off the street by offering them an
attractive alternative to going door to door in search of goodies. This year. Councilman Miller's daughter's efforts were complemented by a large cadre of supporters. Council President Ed Herman offered props and decorations from Dracula's Castle. Councilwoman Dougherty tendered assistance. WIBCO, the Independent Business Organization, was there assisting Numerous Wildwood residents provided the necessities to make the entire evening a resounding success. It is definitely an event worthy of manyyears of continuing success ON THE POLITICAL scene, the Commissioners of Wildwood Crest received a strong public mandate in favor of the construction of a new community center Designed to replace Crest Pier, the facility will be financed by the issuance of i $2 million bonds The center, geared to service the entire com- < munitv. will become the focal point of the borough's recreation program, civic ; events, and will also serve - as a mini-convention center for the approximately 6.000 motel rooms in Wildwood Crest Mayor Frank McCall, with the residents' support behind him. has stated that the next formative stages will take place shortly and the project will begin with a great deal of enthusiasm and community spirit IT IS INTERESTING to note that with the support offered for the Crest center our island could conceivably become, at long
f last, the convention center that it is capable of becom- > -ing. Wildwood is contemplating expansion of the existing Convention Hall with designs of inf creasing square footage I from 20.000 sq. ft. to 80.000 sq. ft. The "new" Crest Pier ofI fers an excellent layout for ' smaller conventions and then there is the Lambert Center proposed for Diamond Beach. Will we become an island of 20.000 motel rooms finally able to host multiple conventions as well as the largest conventions that seem to find other centers and communities more acceptable? Only time and undoubtedly many feasibility studies will tell, but there is a very large and viable business community out there hoping for positive results. TIIE PTA in North Wildwood has embarked upon a unique and obviously well received project. Each Tuesday throughout November, the PTA is offering Domino's Pizza to the students at lunch time. The first time the program was offered, over 300 students took advantage of the reasonable luncheon. It's an excellent program at reduced lunch prices and obviously a menu sought after by many. Kudos to the PTA for the establishment of this tantalizing afternoon project. Mention must be made of another community's PTA project that has been changed. Please take note that the Wildwood Crest PTA offering of $5 family portraits has been changed and will now take place this coming Saturday. If you are interested in this Christmas present project, reservations are a necessity and you are invited to call Judy Davenport at 522-8521 for further particulars. WILDWOOD CATHOLIC High School has long been noted for its excellent theatrical productions. This year, the stage offering will be "Peter Pan" and tickets are available now through the dates of production You may obtain your reserved seating by visiting WCHS at 15th and Central. The dates for the production are Nov 22. 23. 24. and 27 with the curtain rising promptly at 8:15 each night Further information may be obtained by calling the school at 522-7257 WE HAVE ONE hoagie sale to report The Wildwood Crest Volunteer Ambulance Corp. is hosting Saturday sale of the sandwiches Saturday Your sup- [_
port is cordially requested, and it is difficult to find a better cause to support with your lunch money ' The sale will take place between 10 a m. and 2 p.m. at the Corps building at 9300 Pacific Ave. Congratulations are to be extended to Coach Gerald MacFarlene and his very successful soccer team from Wildwood CatholicHigh School. The team pasted a 10 wins. 1 loss and 1 tie record for the 1985 season That was one win more than their counterparts from Absegami. and was sufficient to have them named the CAL Soccer Champs for the year. THE ENTIRE season re « mained very competitive and close between the two rivals. It was the next to the last game, as they met each other in competition, that decided the crown recipient for 1985. WCHS walked away with a 3 to 1 victory over Absegami and by doing so tipped the scale in their favor as league leader. The soccer squad from WCHS. throughout the season, has exhibited excellent team spirit and individual accomplishment.^ Pat MacFarlane. with 16* goals to his credit, was the second place scorer in the county. Sixth highest scorer also goes to a WCHS player, Andy Weiss. Bud McGrath. with six goals, sits in ninth place in scoring. These offensive dynamos represent three of the top ten scorers in the league and were a focal point in the school's meritorious season. Defensively, Matt Cosenza deserves mention. Cosenza was the county's best goal tender with four shut-outs to his credit, and it was this type of defensive excellence that helped WCHS defeat Absegami last week. Our hats are off to each and every WCHS Crusader as they bring the CAL Crown to our island. Your Social Security Check Has A Brand New Look.
