Boat Safety Tips Necessary For All

CAPE MAY - Most hunters and recreational fishermen do not consider themselves boater. To them, the boat is just another piece of equipment needed to engage in their main interest, hunting or fishing, says the United States Coast Guard. A great many sportsmen use small utility boats that tend to be tippy and unstable. Capsizings, sinkings and falls overboard account for 70 percent of boating fatilities, and are directly related to the lack of stability of small boats. Now, with cold weather and cold water, sportsmen should be even more cautious in their preparations to go out in the marshes and back waters. Hunters and fishermen who have their own "private places" must be Knotted At Top CAPE MAY - Middle Township Recreation/Westside Market moved into a tie for first place as it swept past Washington Street Gallery by scores of 15-11, 15-0 and 15-8. The highlight of the match occurred in the second game when Gwyn Wiliams served 15 straight points. In other action. Sandpiper Monogramming Inc., which shares first, defeated Jackson Mountain Cafe in 2 of 3 games by scores of 15-12, 14-16 and 15-9. able to cope with emergencies. Here are a few things to consider? A life jacket (personal flotation device-PFD) is not only required by law, but it is a device that provides the best protection against the most common cause of death in boating - drowning. Several manufacturers produce life jackets that double as fishing or hunting vests, but they are life jackets, and can save a life. Wear them when underway. It is a common belief that someone dressed in heavy clothing and waders will sink immediately should we fall in the water. This is not true. The air trapped in the clothing provides considerable floatation and bending the knees will trap the air in the waters. Providing additional flotation: The secret is to keep calm. DO NOT THRASH about or you will lose the air trapped in the clothing. Do not try to remove any clothing or footwear, or you will exhaust yourself as well as lose the air that keeps you afloat. Keep your knees, bent, get on your back, and paddle slowly to safety. Hypothermia is the loss of body heat, which in water, occurs quite rapidly. If your boat capsizes it will probably still float. If fairly new < 1978 models or newer) it will float even with you in it and full of water or capsized. GET IN OR on the boat to get as much of your body out of the water as possible. If yqtfan't get in the boat a PFD^Rll enable you to keep your head out of the water, which is very important since it is a high heat loss area. Sudden immersion in cold water can be very painful; cause rapid, and uncontrolled breating; cardiac arrest, and other problems. This may cause a person who falls in the Japanese, Chinese Exercises WEST CAPE MAY - Free demonstrations of Tai Chi and Shiatsu are planned at the Body Mechanix Exercise Studio here this Saturday, Nov. 30. The Tai Chi demonstration (Chinese meditation, calisthenics and self defense), will be held 7-9 p.m. Saturday. The demonstration of Shiatsu, a Japanese form of accupressure using massage, will be 8-10 p.m. Nov. 30 at the studio. For more information. Call 884-0777.

water to go under and never come up again alive. Wearing a PFD is the only defense. If you must enter the water, button up your clothing; wear a PFD; and enter the water slowly. A DROWNING victim who has been under water for a considerable time (up to one hour) and shows no signs of life may not be dead. Numerous documented cases exist where victims have been resuscitated with no apparent harmful effects after long immersions. Start CPR immediately and get the victim to a doctor quickly. File a flat plan with a friend or relative so that they know when you depart; where you're headed, and estimated duration. Give them a thorough

description of your boat Have them contact the Coast Guard if you aren't back by your intended return. If you get into trouble, this information will assist someone looking for you. Make sure to tell the person you left your float plan with that you have returned, so you don't create a false alarm. Anyone venturing on the water, for any purpose, in any type of craft, is subject to certain federal and state laws. These laws are designed to provide a minimum level of safety and must be compiled with. Your closest Coast Guard unit and state boating authorities can provide information about the regulations applicable to your boat and its use.
