Salem's Elevator \ Still Out of Action
SALEM — The acting administrator of Port Salem says that the facility will be unable to handle grain shipments for South Jersey farmers this year despite last minute efforts to get the grain elevator in working condition. "We'd really like to apologize to any farmers who were depending on the port as a market for their grain.'' said Terry Rakiewicz. acting administrator at the port. "We did all we could to make repairs on the elevator in time for this year's harvest, but it turn- - ed out to be a situation we just couldn't resolve in time." THE PORT helped put together a package last year in which 120,000 bushels of soybeans from South Jersey farmers were purchased and shipped out through the facility. A total of 500,000 bushels of grain from area farmers were shipped through the port last year, but problems with the grain elevator forcing expensive emergency repairs cut out potential profits for the port. "We know that our inability to help out this year is a disappointment, and it's disappointing to us as well," Rakiewicz said. "Unfortunately, we're going through growipg pains right now, but 1 believe that last year's experience is an indication that we will become a valuable resource to South Jersey's farmers." THE PORT IS in the process of suing the contractor on the elevator construction in an attempt to recoup its losses incurred in last year's emergency repairs Area farmers have been
watching progress at the port to determine if they would be able to use it to market their grain this year. By banding together in large shipments, they are often able to get a bet- , ter price for their grain than they would through individual deals. According to Salem County extension agent David Lee, large companies will pay about 40. cents per bushel above the 5? market price for combination deals, but only if it involves a large volume shipment, about 200.000 bushels or more. EVENTUALLY it is also hoped that a private firm will build storage at the port where grain from South Jersey farmers can be held until the market goes up enough to produce a better profit. "We have every reason to believe that the benefits farmers hoped would be made available to them through the development of the port will become a reality," Rakiewicz said. "Traffic at the port is continually increasingly and more and more businesses are showing an interest in locating here. "As developing here progresses, the opportunities available to farmers will grow," Rakiewicz said. "All we need now is their understanding and patience."
