Substance Abuse Counselor Named
COURT HOUSE - Robbie Keane. of Cape May. has assumed the respon sibilities of a newly created position as substance abuse counselor at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital Het addition to the staff was made possible by a grant from tne New JerseyDepartment of Health, which provides substantial funding for the new service. Ms. Keane. a licensed practical nurse with advanced training in her specialized field, has 13 years of counseling experience in drug and alcohol related programs in Florida. She has initiated various support groups to meet specific needs and has spoken to organizations across the country regarding the problem of substance abuse. MS. KEANE describes her work as "helping sick people who are trying to get well, not bad people trying to get good" She also points out that 80-85 percent of the people who seek help for alcoholism are also addicted to other substances. She will be working closely with the hospital's alcoholism counselor. Ms. Kean's duties at Burdette will include patient evaluation, counseling. and referral to inpatient and outpatient services. She will provide educational programming for BTMH staff, other health care professionals
and community members regarding substance abuse and its treatment. Ms. Keane is currently handlI ing evaluations and followup '.oatment for Middle Township High School I substance abuse program. Commenting on the expansion of services. I William. H. Waldron III, hospital president, said I "When alcoholism and i substance abuse are treated, the whole community benefits. There is less crime and fewer traf- • fic accidents. Individuals ' are healthier. The appointment reflects the hospital's ongoing commitment to the > expansion of resources for care and prevention here in > Cape May County." !
