^ From The Principal By Stanley Kotzen Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School
conscious, rebellious, isolated, teenager who was housed at the youth shelter with a troubled label and little hope. She had all the characteristics of a 16-year-old drop-out. HER STORY IS testimony to a young woman who found selfconfidence in the faith of some caring adults. Her tremendous comeback began with Nancy Girgenti, a case worker for the Division of Youth and Family Services and her counsellor at the Youth Shelter. Nancy was searching for a foster home for Angel k that could provide some I stability for a shaky adolesI cent. Meanwhile, Angel I found a job working at I Lower Cape May Regional I as a secretarial aide for the I summer as part of the I Private Industry Council. I She began to blossom in I the job and the secretaries I at the high school found something very attractive in Angel's manner and dependability. Enter Judy Baxter, one of our Guidance secretaries with whom Angel was working every day. They became close enough that Judy learned of the DYFS search for a foster home for Angel. After several family discussions that included husband Tom. son Tom. a sophomore at Trenton State College, daughter Carolyn, a senior at LCMR. and son Scott, a freshman at LCMR. the Baxters agreed to accept Angel into their homes. The • adjustments that everyone had to make were not always easy, but the results for Angel have been
truly amazing and the Baxters share some of that enormous pride that Angel has gained through her accomplishments in the past year. HAVING A family that offered encouragement and support gave Angel the impetus to spread her wings. She enrolled in college-bound courses and worked harder in school She got involved in tennis, basketball and the school paper. She studied and worked and grew right before our eyes. In May last year she enlisted in the Navy and will pursue a career in public relations as an officer while seeking an NROTC scholarship at Rider College. Haying completed her boot camp training in Orlando. Fla., this summer she started her senior year with a world of self-confidence and an enormous sense of gratitude for the caring family that made it all possible — the Baxters of North Cape May. In Our Town. Emily (the role Angel plays in the drama ) tries to get the audience to appreciate life's every moment. In reality Angel McHale's odyssey these past two years is a better lesson.
