This gala Christmas bazaar will offer 15 tables of assorted holiday delights. Samuel Clemens came in with Halley's Comet in 1835 and went out with it in 1910 as he had predicted. The comet, scheduled to be visible in 1985, appears only every 75 years, but Twin has shed his light on I American Literature for 150 years and promises to live forever. He is called by many the Father of American Literature, the inventory of our literary language. Twain sprang from humble beginnings to win and lose The American Dream. IT IS IRONIC that Samuel Langhorne Clemens chose Mark Twain for his pseudonym. The name refers to a river navigation term that means two fathoms deep — safe water for river boats. But Mark Twain never played it safe, nor enjoyed safe, smooth passage through life. America's premier author, humorist, lecturer and satirist, was born Nov. 30. 1835, in Florida. Mo. He was raised in Hannibal, on the banks of the Mississippi. where he learned the power and beauty of the river. It was this river that became the focal point of his most successful work some 50 years later. BY THE TIME he was 18, he had worked as a printer for his brother Orion's paper, the Hannibal Journal, occasionally contributing humorous copy In 1857. he went to New Orleans and learned to be a steamboat pilot and. in 1861. went out west to mine for silver and gold. When his prospecting attempts didn't pan out. he worked as a correspondent for the Virginia City Ter ritorial Enterprise, trying out a number of pen names such as T J Snodgrass and W Epaninandos Adastrus Blab He settled on Mark Twain in 1863 and used it* throughout his life. Twain steadily gained recognition for his humorous pieces. He finally won national acclaim when, in the fall of 1865. the New York Saturday Press published "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". TWAIN MOVED east and in 1870 married Olivia Langdon. The couple had three daughters. The next 10 years were particularly productive and successful for Twain. The Prince and the Pauper, a historical novel for children. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, an allegorical satire, and Torn Sawyer. his wonderful boyhood novel, are three of his best works from this time. In 1884. Twain published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, his masterpiece, which still inspires awe and controversy. "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called

Huckleberry Finn ... There has been nothing as good since." wrote Ernest Hemingway. ILL. MENCKEN recall ed that when he discovered Huckleberry Finn at 9, it was probably the most stupendous event of my whole life." He believed Twain "the true father of our national literature, the first genuinely American artist of the blood royal." In 1889. when A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court was published, Twain was among the most famous and admired writers in the world. Wealthy, married to the woman he loved, proud father to three healthy daughters, sought after by the famous, he appeared to be the darling of the gods. BUT IN THE '90s his luck went bad. Two failed business ventures cost him his and his wife's fortunes. His health and his wife's began to fail, one daughter became epileptic and one died. At 60. ailing and bankrupt, he set off on a round-the-world tour to pay off his debts — but he was never again trusting about human or divine motivation. Mark Twain died April 21. 1910, in Redding. Conn., of old age and poor health. His birthday is November 30 and this year libraries across the nation are honoring both Huckleberry Finn's 100th birthday and the 150th anniversary of Mark Twin's birth.
