One thing we don't teach very well in school is grieving., Probably that is because it is a life-skill that we take for granted and unfor1 tunately assume we will learn when we are mature and able to handle death and deep emotional loss. As a result, young people don't know how to react when tragedy is hurled into y their lives. They grope for i answers. They are stunned r by life's frailty and they 5 hurt. To see our students f seek for ways to mourn the \ loss of John Tice, friend and i classmate, last week was a > touching experience. 1 FROM THE MOMENT 1 that our staff and students [ are informed Wednesday f morning of the tragic death r of the junior that so many of I them referred to as ' ' Peanut'' until the funeral [ on Friday, a pall had t descended on the school. > Everything seemed to be ' quieter and move at a [ slower pace as if each of us i was searching for some way to discover that the accident really didn't occur. In his se1 cond year at LCMR John was just beginning to be , known and liked by so many of his classmates. He had enjoyed an active summer working on cars and boats and hanging out with a close group of buddies. They all went out for football and John was accepted and cherished as a friend. HIS PLEASANT nature made him a hit with his teacher and he was universally considered to be a

"nice kid". Now he was gone. If it is possible to read into the expressions of teenagers, I saw for those three days a noticeable i doubt Youngsters who I brazely had worn the man- " die of youth's invincibility were slowed and introspective. Life can be extremely precious and fragile, they seemed to sense. School went on and classes changed. homework was assigned and tests administered, but something was missing - John Tice. He was unknown to most of our student body, but we all felt his loss. WITH THE FUNERAL on Friday, our students knew what to do. They wept and wailed as the casket bearing their friend moved from the chapel to some final resting place. Their mournful cries mixed with those of John's family, came as a welcome release from the strain of the incomprehensibility that this tragic accident had produced. Emily Dickinson's words of more than 100 years ago remain as meaningful today: "In this short life that only last an hour how much - how little is within our power". John Tice can be remembered by a memorial scholarship that will be established by his family. Contributions can be sent to the family or Lower Cape May Regional High School. This is one way that our grieving can show a lasting respect to the memory of a nice young man.
