(From Page 24) In dedicating the dam. Director Cookingham said this beautiful wildlife area was available for use by the general public for ail 12 months of the year. The area is used by hikers, picnickers and birdwatchers as well as hunters and fishermen. "WE HOPE THE users of the tract respect it," Cookingham said. One of the bystanders at the dedication observed that on a recent Birdwatchers Roundup at the Wildlife Management area, a piliated w oodpecker was spotled on the site. According to the birder who passed on the information, that was the first spotting of a piliated woodpecker since the 1800s. The area is noted for the number of species of birds which can be observed over all 12 months of the year. That this is a hiultiple use area is Important for the general public to remem ber The preservation and protection of this area rests in the hands of the Division of Fish. Game and Wildlife and its abilities to keep the . area in balance That's only part of the problem SATI RE NEEDS help It needs the assistance of all of us who use areas such as this That means that the users of the area have to i respect it Trash and litter
should not be deposited on the area by the litterbugs and trashers who seem to find places like this a target of their trashing activities. Vandalism is another problem. It is hoped that the area will escape this kind of abuse. Wood cutting by anyone is prohibited unless by permit. No plans are in the immediate offering to allow cutting by permit, but the long-range plan is to include culling of dead wood at some point in time. Meanwhile, woodcutters are reminded that they face severe penalties if they cut on land other than where they are supposed to be They must stay either on their own land or land on which they have been given permission or for which they have permits. USE OF Wildlife Management areas is painted with a rather broad brush There are some restrictions de- . signed to keep the area in proper balance best to aid the wildlife to thrive and at the same time, open up the area to maximum multiple use for all to enjoy It is only by careful use of land such as this that it will remain open and available It is ours to use and enjoy. We owe a lot to the foresight of the people who preserved as much New Jersey open space as has been protected. More can be set aside for public ownership and public . enjoyment Open space is J badly needed WHAT WE DO have is lit j tie enough and it has to be , shared by lots of users, j Sometimes there are con- j flicts between user groups, j One which is most obvious is j the clash between the hunter I and the non-hunter. Both are ] dedicated to the cause of I protecting the environment . 0 They do not see eye to eye on £ the hunting issue and they | do fight over it. We all can learn a lot with 9 a visit to Beaver Swamp j Wildlife Management area. 5 There is lots of opportunity J for all to enjoy. There are lots of other areas which should and could be preserved It takes cooperative effort to get things done. Beaver Swamp Wildlife Management area is a classic example.
