United Way Prints New Directory
By GREGG LAWSON COURT HOUSE - A 40-page Directory of Human Services, intended for human and social service professionals and people interested in health care, has been printed by the county United Way's First Call For Help (UWFCFH) division. "It is not really intended for the man in the street, but as a desk-top reference for people concerned with social and health care needs." said Virginia Beryl Budd, who compiled and edited the booklet. The 3»2-by-8'2 inch red index was designed as a companion to the Directory of County and Municipal Officials, and is used by volunteers who man the agency's 24-hour information and referral service. Budd said 5.000 copies were printed and more than 1,000 distributed to newspapers, municipalities, various agencies and United Way volunteers. The bulk of the remainder are in the agency office at the Library Building here. Requests for information fall into eight needs listed by a United Way indentification system, according to Budd. They are: adequate income, good health, food, clothing, l shelter, transportation, education, a safe environment, safety and security, the ability to function well in society and develop to full potential, and organizations, institutions and services assuring that all services are met. THE BOOKLET S index lists agencies under those needs and each need is subdivided to suit individual problems. Agency numbers are given for reference. Numerically listed agencies follow, with addresses, phone numbers and a brief description of each. An alphaflfrcal listing completes package. The United Way paid for paper costs out of its budget and the printing was done by the Office of Public Affairs. Public Affairs Director Lou Rodia

estimated the total paper cost to be $300. Speical thanks go to Catherine Abel and Jerry Constande of Public Affairs. Budd said. Abel assisted with typesetting and layout. Costande with actual production. Budd said the current directory was based on a , resource index published by the Human Services Coalition in the 1970s and revised by United Wav in 1979-80. "It's never been updated, and there have been a lot of requests, especially by the Human Services Commission. for a desk-top reference manual," she said. In 1983. Budd took over as director of UMFCFH and began working on an updated index, trying to duplicate agencies in the County and Municipal Officials directory as little as possible. The booklet can be obtained by writing to United Way of Cape May County. Central Mail Room. Cape May House. NJ 08219, or by calling 465-5300. SSI Checks Scheduled On Nov. 29 WILDWOOD - Monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) checks which are normally delivered on the first day of the month, will be delivered Friday, Nov. 29 instead, according to Del Brooks, manager of the Wildwood Social Security Office. » "Benefit checks are mailed early when the usual delivery date falls on a Saturday. Sunday or legal holiday." Brooks said. "In these instances, the checks are dated and delivered on the first day before the first of the month that is not a weekend or holiday." Brooks stated that this procedure helps reduce the problems that people have when they receive their checks and their banks are closed. These situations occur several times during the year, and Brooks added that SSA would provide similar information about early check deliveries as they occur. Pvt. The momentos of their life together are about all they have left, according to Mrs. Hughes who long ago was given her first doll by the couple.
