With the days getting shorter and the temperatures starting to dip. now seems the perfect time to devote to some column space to my summer reading list. In fact, the number of high quality books on rock, jazz, blues and country are so great it will probably takes several weeks to mention them all and, then. I'm afraid, several will, unintentionally, be forgotten. I'm trying to rush the season, but remember, not only do records make nice Christmas presents, but so do books and most of what I I plan to cover would please Ithe serious music lover. 'Besides, books offer a I healthy alternative to Solid (gold, MTV, Soul Train, et ,al. j The Motown Story (Scribners) by Don Waller 'is a fascinating history' of J one of our country's mast successful (artistically as well as commercially) independent record labels. Waller, in a hip, carefree style neatly tells of the successes. failures, joys, and heartbreaks of the soul label that was the brainchild of Detroiter Berry Gordy. READ WHAT went on behind the smashes of The Supremes, Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, Temptations. etc., then take a look at the discography that closes out this must-own book and start buying the records your still missing. Hopefully, The Motown Story will sell enough copies to convince Mr. Waller to tackle other labels, such as Stax. The $24.50 price tag of Sheldon Harris' Blues Who's Who (Da Capo) might seem a little steep, but take my word for it. the book would be worth twice the price. For blues connoisseurs, this is an essential piece of work. HARRIS HAS put together biographies of nearly six hundred blues musicians. listing records, major concerts, television appearances, and other assorted facts that have me drooling over this book almost daily. Calling this the definitive blues document is a gross understatement, Englishman Charlie Gillett's The Sound Of The City (Pantheon) is, without a doubt, the most readible history of rock and roll ever written and one better be ready to -fail if trying to outdo it. Gillet not only tells how the blues gave birth to rock and roll, but he shows its growth from the early rockabilly pioneers on through the prefabricated teen idols of the early sixties, British invasion beat bands, psychedelia, folkrock, soul, country and bubblegum. He also points out how the music related to what was going on socially and politically. There are lots of facts thrown at the reader, but what keeps The Sound Of The City from being just another boring text book is that Charlie Gillett is obviously a fan who loves music. THERE ARE BETTER BOOKS ON Bob Dylan than Chris Rowley's Blood On

The Tracks (Proteus), but this should still satisfy the folk-rocker's many fans. Rowley's easy-going style makes for quick reading, serving as a tight, concise introduction to Bob Dylan. Using some relatively obscure photos will be what lures Dylan's faithful, who already know most of what's between these covers, to the checkout counter with Blood On The Tracks. It seems like only yesterday folk-rocker Scott McKenzie sang "Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair when in San Francisco." but it's now close to twenty years since bands like The Jefferson Airplane. Quicksilver. Grateful Dead, and MobyGrape shook up the music world. AUTHORS Gene Sculatti and David Seay have done ( Page 49 Please )
