Hurley Sponsors $11M Shore Bill

TRENTON — Senator James R. Hurley. R-Cape May. Cumberland, has introduced legislation appropriating $11.5 million for shore protection projects in Avalon. Stone Harbor and North Wildwood. The money would be appropriated from the $50 million 1983 Shore Protection Bond Issue, which Sen.

Hurley also sponsored. After this appropriation, about $20 million will remain in the bond issue fund. Senator Hurley said. "The appropriation I am requesting would pay for two major shore protection projects: a beach fill project aliong Seven Mile Beach in Avalon and Stone Harbor and the continued construction of a seawall in North Wildwood. "EROSION HAS been increasingly severe along the beach in the northern section of Avalon. In the last three to four years. 10 to 20 feet of beach and sand dunes have disappeared. Environmental experts tell me that if another major storm hits Avalon. the area between 8th Street and 17th Street could be destroyed." Hurley continued. "In the early 1970s, construction began on a seawall in North Wildwood along Hereford Inlet The incomplete seawall has proven to be an effective deterrent against beach erosion in the area. My appropriation will fund the completion of the 1.200-foot wall and give the area further protection from the elements " "HURRICANE Gloria, along with several other recent severe storms, drastically illustrates the need for shore protection projects." Senator Hurley said "The natural process of the incoming and outgoing tides and the wind all work to wear away our beaches over a long period of time. Storms increase that damage at least tenfold. We must act now to protect our precious shoreline before we no longer have a shoreline to protect." Other projects covered by the appropriation include beach restoration in Old Bridge Township, a bulkhead for Ocean City and a beach restoration project in Elsinboro. Salem County.
