S.J. Gas Asks End To Taxes

FOLSOM — South Jersey Gas Co. has filed a petition with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities requesting authority to implement the recently signed legislation by Governor Thomas Kean which would approve the elimination of gross receipts and franchise taxes on natural gas used for cogeneration. Cogeneration is a process of using natural gas to generate electricity and

recover usable heat. This technique has applications primarily for industrial and large commercial facilities and represents a more efficient use of existing energy sources. COGENMtATION is, in part, a conservation effort that will require the cooperation of all parties involved to effect a net reduction in energy used at each facility. This bill, sponsored by

This petition, which was filed Aug. 26, is being reviewed by the Board of Public Utilities staff, and the company is hopeful it. along with the latest filing, will be acted upon relatively soon by the board.
