Certainly one of the things Thanksgiving Day is all about is remembering our heritage, and the heritage of Cape May County is proudly remembered, securely kept, and beautifully displayed at the Cape May County Museum on Route 9 in Swainton. The Museum is operated by the Cape May County Historical and_ Genalogical ' Society, which* was founded I in 1927 by Edward Post, who i lived in the 150-year-old | farmhouse where I now live. and where we have our an- ' tiques shop. JOHN POST Edward s grandson, is now my next door neighbor. He still keeps the beautiful family farmlands and woods behind uS. John tells me that his family paid a man with a mule team to clear the land for farming ( he was paid in gold), and that more than a century of farming had turned up a great many Indian arrowheads, tools, cooking implements, and sharads of pottery. Research revealed that the land was once used by the native Lenni Canape Indians as a settlement and hunting grounds. SEAFOOD SHKI.I.S and fossil bones were discovered. indicating that the indians fished, crabbed and eeled these waters, and brought their catch inland. It was with these indian finds, along with the farm I tools and other implements I of his early settling ancestors. that Edward Post be-

gan the County Historical Society's Museum in the basement of the old Courthouse building. The Museum is now housed in the old John Holmes House, which is a preRevoluntionary War structure. and what an inspiring collection it has envolved into! I AM NOT a native of Cape May County, but I certainly feel like one now. after visiting the museum and speaking with its current curator. Somers Corson. whose family is also one of the first families of the county. Corson introduced me to the tour director. Horace Griffith, and I joined his tour out back in the huge barn. Soon we were gathered around one of the most magnificent architectural structures I have ever seen — the huge glass top of the old Cape May Lighthouse. "GRIFFITH'S expertise unravelled the mysteries of the lighthouse's design, as well as a bit of Cape May's seafaring history. The barn also contains pieces of sunken treasure, farming, fishing, hunting and cooking implements of the early settlers and the native Indian tribes.

The main house has authentically furnished Victorian rooms, including a parlor, bedroom and nursery There is a great collection of local glassware (one of South Jersey's prize contributions to America 's culture). and. since the house was once a doctor's office, there are some old medical instruments that will give you the willies just to look at. GRIFFITH'S TOUR of the gun room is particularly inspiring. There are superbly kept mementoes from every conflict this country has been involved in from the Revolution to Viet- « nam. This is what loving antiques is all about, this is what the holiday season is all about — connecting-up with our past and with our traditions. Corsor\ promises that the museum will be decorated specially this holiday season. and I can't think of a better way to celebrate than by spending some time there The Museum also has a gift shop. For information on museum hours and about the Dec. 14 open house, call the Museum at 465-3535.
