'-Thanksgiving 1985A Presidential Proclamation Although the time and date of the first American thanksgiving observance may be uncertain, there is no question but that this treasured custom derives from our Judeo-Christian heritage. "Unto Thee. O God. do we give thanks." the Psalmist sang, praising God not only for the "wondrous works" of His creation, but for loving guidance and deliverance from dangers. A band of settlers arriving in Maine in 1607 held a service of thanks for their safe journey, and twelve years later settlers in Virginia set aside a day of thanksgiving for their survival. In 1621 Governor William Bradford created the most famous of all such observances at Plymouth Colony when a bounteous harvest prompted him to proclaim a special day "to render thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings." The Spaniards in California and the Dutch in New Amsterdam also held services to give public thanks to God. in 1777, during our War of Independence, the Continental Congress set aside a day for thanksgiving and praise for our victory at the battle of Saratoga. It was the first time all the colonies took part in such an event on the same day. The following year, upon news that France was coming to our aid. George Washington at Valiey Forge prescribed a special day of thanksgiving. Later, as our first President, he responded to a Congressional petition by declaring Thursday. November 26. 1789. the first Thanksgiving Day of the United States of America. Although there were many state and national thanksgiving days proclaimed in the ensuing years, it was the tireless crusade of one woman. Sarah Josepha Hale, that finally led to the establishment of this beautiful feast as an annual nationwide observance. Her editorials so touched the heart of Abraham Lincoln that in 1863 — even in the midst of the Civil War — he enjoined the countrymen to be mindful of their many blessings, cautioning them not to forget "the source from which they come." that they are "the gracious gifts of the Most High God... " Who ought to be thanked "with one heart and one voice by the whole American People." It is in that spirit that I now invite all Americans to take part again in this beautiful tradition with its roots deep in our history and deeper still in our hearts. We mainfest our gratitude to God for the many blessings he has showered upon our land and upon its people. In this season of Thanksgiving we are grateful for our abundant harvests and the productivity of our industries; for the discoveries of our laboratories: for the researches of our scientists, writers, clergy, teachers, physicians, businessmen, engineers, public servants, farmers, mechanics, artisans, and workers of every sort whose honest toil of mind and body in a free land rewards them and their families and enriches our entire Nation. Let us thank God for our families, friends, and neighbors, and for the joy of thisgj|gry festival we celebrate in His name. Let every ho^t of worship in the land and every home and every heart be filled w ith the spirit of gratitude and praise and love on this Thanksgiving Day. NOW. THEREFORE. I. RONALD REAGAN. President of the United States of America, in the spirit and tradition of the Pilgrims, the Continental Congress, and past Presidents, do hereby proclaim Thursday. November 28. 1983, as a day of national Thanksgiving. I call upon every citizen of this great Nation to gather together in homes and places of worship and offer prayers of praise and gratitude for many blessings Almighty God has bestowed upon our beloved country. IN WITNESS WHEREOF. I have hereunto set my hand this fifteenth day of November, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and tenth. RONALD REAGAN
Limitation (From Page 66) allow abused children to prosecute when mentally and emotionally able to d?al with the reality of the offense? ASSEMBLYWOMAN Perun's- A-2205 would extend the five-year statute of limitations to age of majority plus two. This would allow victims of child abuse to prosecute and stop offenders who statistically might other-wise go on to abuse many other children in their lifetimes. The Women's Commission is lending its support to passage of this legislation, and we urge other concerned citizens to likewise support this bill. This legislation can be passed this year. With our support, the lives of many children as well as adults can be changed. CHERRI OLSEN Corresponding Secretary Cape May County Advisory Commission of the Status of Women

Continuing our series discussing common diagnostic tests, today we will discuss the much advertised cancer-screen-ing tool the "stool for occult blood". First allow me to dispell one of the greatest fears associated with this simple test. A positive result does not mean that you have cancer, only that you may have it. Our discovery that checking a person's bowel movements for the presence of blood can yield clues for possible early colon cancer has already saved tens, if not hundreds of thousands of lives. Colon cancer detected before there are symptoms is almost 75 percent curable. WHY WOULD blood show up in your bowel movement? Simply, as the bowel movement travels through the lower digestive tract it is picking up cells and material from the walls of the colon. A polyp that is brushed by the bowel movement is likely to shed a few drops of blood. a flat early cancer eating at the walls may also bleed. Other diseases can be detected including ulcerative colitis, where blood will pool in the ulcers. Diverticulosis and hemmorhoids are common causes of the presence of blood, as well. IT IS absolutely essential that you follow the diet and medication instructions on the test card or you can get a falsely negative or positive result. For example, animal blood may not get digested and show up in your bowels. Vitamin C can trick the test into a false result as can horseradish, turnips, cauliflower, cucumber, carrot, grapefruit and cantaloupe. Aspirin is well known to cause digestive bleeding and should be avoided while preparing for the test. Even brushing your eeth too hard and causing olood to be swallowed can affect the result. So. follow that card! IF YOU DO get a positive result, then your doctor will decide upon a digestive workup. This may include the upper and lower GI's. sigmoidoscopy, endoscopy and colonoscopy. That's right, the colonoscopy, just as was ordered for the president's case. These tests will be described in detail in another column. The colonoscopy basically involves sliding a flexible tube with optical fibers up the rectum and through the lower tract to look for hemmorhoids. tumors, polyps and diverticula.. THE STOOL FOR occult blood test is an inexpensive. simple and excellent tool for the early detection of colon cancer Be sure you take advantage of it. If we in the American Cancer Society could encourage everyone over 45 to perform the test once a year, polyps could be removed when small and 75 percent of colon cancer deaths could be prevented Many of my patients don't want to do the test, but when I or my nurses explain its- importance, virtually every agrees "it's
J\ inst\ minutes that might save their life." REMEMBER, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. Unfor"jnately it's also the
disease "nobody wants to talk about." Health Watch is a public education project of the ! Cape May County Unit of N the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beit man is President. Letters can be addressed to Dr. Robert Beitman, 108 N. Main St.. Cape May Court House. NJ 08210.

When it comes to cooking turkeys. I'm an expert. That's no idle boast. I've learned the hard way. A couple of weeks ago, No. 1 called home from his college apartment. "Mom" he said, "my roommates and 1 just bought a turkey. Can you tell us how to cook it?" At No. I s age, he doesn't come to me for much advice anymore, so my heart beat wildly in my chest. "Is there a cookbook around there?" I asked. "Yeah," said No. 1. "but I thought it would be faster to have you tell me how to do it. I'll take notes." THE PROFESSOR cleared her throat and started to speak: "First, class." I said, "you must remove the plastic bag." "Huh?" said No. 1. "Isn't there a plastic bag around thp turkey?" I asked. - "Yes. there is." said No. 1. f "The first time I fixed a turkey, no cookbook I had been given for a wedding present told me to cut off the plastic bag first. It took roe a little while to figure it out." I said. "Okay." No. 1 reported. "I've just taken off the plastic bag." "NEXT STEP." I said, "is to remove the wire that's holding the legs together " "How do I do that?" No. 1 asked. "Do you have a pair of pliers around there''" I asked. No 1 put down the phone awhile and I could hear him walking around. ( What the heck. I figured, he's footing the bill on this telephone call). After a while. I could hear him grunting He got back on the phone "The legs won't come out away from the wire Ugh." said No 1 into the phone. "Keep tugging," I said. More grunts for awhile, and then No. l said. "Okay Mom. what's next?" "NEXT YOU HAVE TO GO into the cavity and get out the little paper bag with the giblets." I said It's not in there." No 1 reported "Then try the neck cavity." I said After a while. No. 1 was back on the phone "I got it. Monr." he reported. "Now what0" Sjust rinse out the cavity and pat it dry with paper towels, but don't forget to take them out before you stuff the turkey ." I said I once left the paper towels inside so I know what I'm talking about ." "Guess you'd better tell me now about stuffing the turkev." No. 1 "Okay." I said "After you take out the paper towels you £ chop them up Huh ' " said No 1 Just wanted to see if you were paying attention." I said
