CAPE MAY - A Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Cape May rescued two brothers whose craft had caught fire Saturday. Nov. 23. off the coast of Assateague Island . Maryland. Coast Guard Group Cape May responded to a Mayday radio call about 12:33 p.m. from the sport fisherman Gale Force reporting that a boat was on fire and the two people on board were preparing to abandon ship. THE COAST Guard helicopter, with Lt. Edward DeWitt and Lt. JG Michael Farrell as copilots and Petty Officer Rick Litka as crew, arrived on the scene about 1:25 p.m. to find the 52-foot Hatteras engulfed in flames. Circling overhead was a Navy S-3 jet airplane, which had dropped a probe and remained at the scene to assist if necessary. The owner. Edward | Szewczyk of Neptune, and his brother. Stanley / Szewczyk of Brielle. had abandoned the vessel when the fire got out of control. ^ THE OWNER was able K to get into an inflatable I boat, while his brother was [ forced into the 58-degree water with only a personal flotation device. | After flying by the burn1 ing boat, the helicopter " crew found Edward safe in
the inflatible about one quarter mile downwind of the burning vessel. With assistance from the Navy jet. the rescuers quickly found Stanley in the water about one-eighth mile upw ind from the burning boat. Once the brothers were safely aboard, the chopper was flown to SalisburyPeninsula General Hospital Salisbury. Md.. where they were treated.
