Mayor Says Pay Cut 'Hampers' Revitalization

By <;kk<;<; lawson WILDWOOD - Progress on the proposed SB-million revitalization of the downtown business district has been "hampered" by Law Director Charles Henry James" $13,000 pay cut. Mayor Victor DiSylvester said this week. SS/Checks Getting New Look RIO GRANDE - The familiar green Social Security check is getting a new and more colorful look. Beginning Dec. 3, notes the county Office on Aging, the new checks will feature the Statue of Liberty over a multicolored background. The Treasury's Financial Management Service is concerned that the new checks will be confusing, and is anxious to inform the public of the change. Beginning in February, the Internal Revenue Service will issue refunds on the new check.

City Council on Nov, 2U unanimously voted to adopt a salary ordinance cutting James' pay to $27,000. a move DiSylvester vehemently opposed The mayor said the cut will make it impossible for him to assign extra projects, including the Pacific Avenue plan "I've been told (James will be paid» no more than $27,000. and for that he has to do all the paper work for the city administration." DiSylvester told this newspaper "How do I then give him (extra » projects with no pay0 The legal work for this project (revitalization) will be phenomenal." COUNCIL VICE-PRESI-DENT Karen Dougherty said legal costs probably can be budgeted, and that council has not seen enough information on the project "I think it is a very good concept, but no real figures have been given." she said "It's hard to evaluate it when there are no concrete expenditures." She also said council has been preoccupied with correcting the sewage problem that caused beach closings in April. "Everyone's priority should be what's going on underneath the streets, not

on top of them." Doughertysaid. DiSylvester and Dougherty said council will meet with architects Sykes. O'Connor, and Salerno, ol Margate, before the end of the year to discuss details of the project.
