Dear Dr. Beitman: r The last time I went to % my doctor he ordered a | series of blood tests. Not ) only were these expensive < and numerous, but I really don't understand how they j help doctors do their work. > My symptoms are fatique. ; lack of ambition, constant- . ly getting colds, and a per- , sistent aching in my bones. | What would you do? i B.N.1. Fishing Creek i Dear B.N. : I In practicing the art of , medicine doctors need what 1 call "windows into the body". X-rays are one window technique. The ! physical exam is another, the interview yet another. Screening procedures as pulmonary function tests, sigmoidoscopy, stool test I plus others too numerous to mention, are also available. YET. ONE of the most useful windows has been j proven time after time to be the analysis of a perj son's blood. Blood powers the body. . The amount of blood in your body makes a great I deal of difference to your health. Whether all the parts of your blood are in j proper balance (red and white blood cells, platelet s count) or not can reflect j health or disease. Clues to e health problems can be seen via blood analysis. We can check the nutrid tional state by analyzing if. e food is being properly e broken down and carried to all the body's tissues. Your body's chemical balance is
reflected in the blood. 4 which can tell us if you're a kidney, liver or problem, for example. 1 OFFER my patients an annual blood screening which covers all the basic and some of the more sophisticated tests. If this uncovers an abnormality, then I order additional tests for clarification. It never ceases to amaze me often these tests turn up a totally unexpected result. I am convinced of their value. To answer your question in greater detail, over the next several weeks we will discuss many of the different blood tests, what they measure and what health problems can be associated with abnormal results.
