COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Council on Alcoholism held a planning meeting in the Department of Health Building at Crest Haven Complex recently to discuss AlcoholRelated Women's Issues such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Effects and Alcohol on Women and Female Youth. The council is hoping to co-sponsor three seminars on these topics with groups such as the A.A.U.W.. Family Planning. O.B. Clinic members. Child Study Teams, and Social Services personnel like the Welfare Board. Organizers are Carol Kaslander and Lucille Cannava. both from the Division of Alcoholism. THE HARMFUL effects of alcohol intake in pregnancy in the critical first eight to 10 weeks include: spontaneous abortions or still births, reduced birth weight, reduced size and
head circumference at I birth, growing deficiency (even though nutrition is adequate ) . poor sucking and poor eating habits, failure to thrive, eye and ear anomalies, cardiac defects, poor coordination, irritability. hyperactivity and mental retardation.

Then accept the fact alcoholism is a disease, not a sign of craziness or moral weakness Finally, that there is hope" These seminars, which will be offered for credits such as Nursing CEU, CAC Certification and Recertification ICME's for physicans and Substance Abuse Certification, will hopefully increase, doctor, nurse, hospital personnel, child development personnel and counseling personnel for all county. state and school agencies as well as the general public's knowledge of alcoholism and alcohol effects on women.
