> Leather Gifts Are (Almost) Forever

Bv JOHN AND NANCY BAILEY A sage once said, "a gift of leather if forever". Well I maybe not forever; but. | when you do give a gift of leather to someone you ' love, you can be sure that gift will be used every day I for years to come. You will remembered every time is used. Anything that is durable these days is a good value, regardless of cost, and leather is no exception. However, there is such a tremendous range of fine useful leather articles that you can simply choose your category and make vour selection. FOR EXAMPLE, a tool cd key fob of English leather is a useful stocking stuffer for under $5. Wallets, handbags, and and buckle combinations are available to' the discriminating gift buyer for $20 to Sioo. And. for cowhide business cases, luggage pieces, and clothing, you can expect prices that begin at $100 or more

Ideas for gifts from your local leather shops abound. Pocket secretaries, card cases, passport cases, atI tache's. and luggage for the business person/traveler. WARM SHEARLING i sheep's wool) slippers, mittens, and hats for that person on your list who is always cold when the thermostat is below 90 degrees ; leather toy animals, shearling booties, and mittens for the favorite young people on your list. Snow boots, moccasins, leather hats, belts with solid brass buckles, and vests are ideal for the out doors person. And sandals, belts, side pouches, bags, wallets and key cases are useful gifts for people of all ages. MOST LEATHER shops have the tools and means to personalize their offerings with gold lettering or tooling initials. A wallet or secretary that is personalized with initials, accents the gift. When selecting a gift such as a wallet or a shoulder bag i that is going to be used daily for the next several years), choose with care. Most people become accustomed to a certain style of "everyday" things. It seems to be difficult to change from old familiar friends. IF' YOUR loved one's beloved old tri-fold wallet has seen its best days, give a new tri-fold. You will be glad you did If the lady on your list carries an orgranized. multicompartmented shoulder hag and the vinyl is worn and torn, replace it with a - ' you supply the answer ■ I think you have the idea

now. Of course ignore all of the above if the Christmas list says Hobo Bag; then buy a Hobo Bag regardless the rules ANOTHER important factor in choosing leather gift is the quality of the leather. When leather is processed, the tanners split each single hide into many layers. They sell these "splits" as suede; or finish them on one side to make them appear like those from the top surface. Stores market these finished leathers as "genuine leather"' or "cowhide"; which indeed they are. However, there can be only one top grain on each hide and this is the finest peice. IT IS OFTEN slightlyscarred or marked because it was the outer layer of a living animal's skin So. to the inexperienced eye. a finished leather might appear more desirable. But the durability: the toughness, the ease of maintenance, the lovelyaging process, (the hallmarks of fine leathers) are characteristics that belong only to the top grain. Of course, this difference in quality is reflected in the price. When shopping for a leather jacket, vest, or bag comapre the look and feel of a shiny (plasticized) finished leather with the duller lustre of a top grain article Then look at the price tags. GIVEN SIMILAR styles

and quality of workmanship. you will find the top i grain item is much more expensive... and worth it! Once you've taken all of these factors into consideration — price, style, quality — you will be prepared to select a leather item that's sure to please. Santas with gifts under their trees from their local leather shops will give gifts that will still be working on the day after Christmas. And the day after that, and the day after that, and ... almost forever.
