Christmas Tree: Enjoying It Safely

HIGHLAND PARK - While Christmas trees are a beautiful way to capture the holiday spirit, they can also be a potential hazard, warns George K. Plasket. president of the Independent Insurance Agents of New Jersey (IIA/NJ). "Christmas trees pose several substantial threats

that can have tragic results. However, a little common sense and basic precautions will enable you to enjoy the holiday season safely." says Plasket. He recommends taking the following steps: • HANG YOUR ornaments out of the reach of children. • Make sure light strings are in good condition: check for broken sockets and frayed cords. Don't overload sockets. • Don't permit light bulbs to rest on or touch branches. • Turn off all decorative lights before leaving the home or going to bed. You'll prevent fire hazards — and save electricity too. • If you use paper or fabric hangings, make sure they are flame-resistant. • Keep metal tinsel away from electric sockets and electric train tracks. • Artificial trees won't catch fire, but they can pose shock hazards if defective wiring or lights are used. PLASKET ALSO suggests that when you purchase your tree, ask the seller to saw off the base. The freshly cut base should then be inserted into an appropriate holder designed to retain water. Fill the basin, and keep the tree wet. A dry tree can ignite into flames like an incendiary device. "By following these simple precautions you will be able to enjoy your Christmas tree safely and prevent your holiday season from being marred by any mishaps," Plasket says.
