Brrr. it s cold. Cape May County is in the midst of a bracing cold spell, and no place in the county is as cold as Five Mile Beach Really. It must be the wind Since my arrival upon our sandy shores a decade or so ago. what has struck me most about the winters is the WIND. It is absolutely discomforting. It seems to me that it was almost exactly a year ago M that I was discussing the 1 same situation. I suppose it bl is the first cold spell that accentuates the wind's impact Some seem unaf fected though This week. I • watched a small clam boat I i coasting along the shore. The clammers didn't seem to mind. TIIK WOKKMF.N at the Kl Coronado were spraywashing the entire outside of the building in preparation for a new coat of exterior paint. In their bright yellow raincoats, they didn't seem to mind either I watched a young man existing Super Fresh in North Wildwood With one hand he was steering his cart and with the other he was holding down his i
parcels lest the wind lift and deposit them in the marshes adjoining the parking lot He had an unaffected look about him. I TBI ST. however, thai down deep Umw were all cursing the knifing gales that lash us all They should all have a turn at penning a weekly column Complaining about the elements is therapeutic: alter all. there isn't much else one can do about it Two congratulatory com ments are needed this week. The first to Carlo and Anne Accardi of North Wildwood on the birth of their daughter. Patricia Mary. Seventeenth Avenue has a population plus one and so will the North Wildwood Republican Club in a few years, no doubt. The second kudo goes to Wildwood's guru of glass. Steve Patri/i. Owner and operator of the Wildwood* (ilass Co.. Patrizi has been a very active member of the Rio Grande Volunteer Fire Department for many years. His activities and efforts have never gone unnoticed and for 1 9H5-8I1 Patrizi will serve as the Department's organiza I tonal president FOR TIIK PAST fewyears. the County Ml'A has gotten a lot of press coverage In fact, without the Ml'A many local papers would be hard pressed for controversial copy It is. however, newsworthy, both the positive and negative. Here's some more' The Ml'A has targeted several county com mumties for their failure to enthusiastically embrace the Ml'A's recycling effort
and assistance Wildwood Crest is among those singled out as lacking eni thusiasm in joining an ML'A -spearheaded recycling plan. Perhaps its time for Mayor McCall's Environmental Commission to make a recommendation to the triumvirate that rules the roost in the Crest : either a home-grown, fully committed recycling program or participation with the M U A-spearheaded effort in conjunction with private enterprise. RECYCLING IS a must In fact, much of what the ML'A does is a must ; it is just a tough bullet to bite sometimes. But. when you begin finding more onegallon plastic milk jugs than shells along the beach, you "gotta" begin to wonder. Recycling not only puts renewable resources hack into circulation, it keeps land-fills open longer for the stufl that absolutely nobody wants to recycle, and most just want to bury it! That is certainly a plus for recycling And. about those milk jugs, they should ban those buggers' Metal and rusts eventually goes away. Paper decomposes and will eventually vanish. (Ilass is ever s o s I o w I v disintegrated by wind and rain action, but it nevertheless goes away But those milk jugs' They are probably the most nonbiodegradable product ever conceived by man I HAPPEN TO be old enough to have lived during the transition from glass bottles to cardboard halfgallon containers They touted the cardboard con-
tainers as being far superior as the light would not negate the vitamin D content of the milk. Good idea. No glass to break, more healthful milk. It made sense and the container was cardboard and wax. Recyclable, of course. Another few decades of progress and we're back to a transparent container that lessens the vitamin D content of the milk and the blasted container will never go away. NEVER. Twenty-third century archeologists may well define our civilization as the Age of the Plastic Milk Jug. Anyhow, before getting back on track, don't buymilk in the on-galion plastic jugs and by all means support your community's recycling efforts. TWO EVENTS worthy of mention this upcoming week. The first is slated for this Saturday at the Wildwood Recreation Center. The department has scheduled an indoor bazaar and flea makret for your shopping browsing pleasure. The event is set to begin 9 a.m. Saturday and continue through 2 p.m Santa Glaus is going to attend and pictures with Santa are being offered 10 a. m to I p.m A wide variety of merchan dise is expected Proceeds from the event will go to further the activities of the Wildwood String Band and several other local organizations The Recreation Center is located at 243 E. Rio Grande Ave. between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues. i Page 43 Please i
