Job Connection ' To Help Dropouts
MAYS LANDING - High school dropouts having trouble finding a job now have a direct "connection" to employment through a new program sponsored by Atlantic Community College ( ACC) and the Atlantic/Cape May Private Industry Council. The "Job Connection." located at ACC's City Center. 1535 Bacharach Blvd., Atlantic City, is open to Atlantic and Cape May County residents aged 16 to 21 who have dropped out of high school and are having difficulty securing employment, according to Tom Collins, coordinator of the program. Participants also must meet the financial eligibility requirements set forth by the Job Partnership Training Act program, he said. THERE IS great need for such a service in this area, according to Collins. "The unemployment rate in Atlantic and Cape May Counties for young people is about 15 percent. For minority youth, the figure is 25 percent and it's even higher for Atlantic City. These high unemployment figures for youth are particularly striking when con-
trasted with the fact that Atlantic County leads the state in the creation of new jobs." Gene Hudgins and Ada Barlatt work for the Job Connection identifying persons who qualify and training them in the program. "The first thing participants learn what it takes to find and keep a job," said Hudgins. "After the job readiness workshop, we develop an employment plan for them and, finally, we give them placement assistance, which will lead directly to a
job, skills training or entry into higher education." ACCORDING TO Barlatt. this approach helps not only the youth but the employers as well. "By serving as a screening service. the Job Connection will help reduce training costs." she said. Collins said he feels that one of the primary advantages of the Job Connection is its affiliation with Atlantic Community College.
"Participants who need to upgrade their basic reading and math skills will be able to do so through attending day or night classes at ACC's Adult Learning Center adjacent to the Job Connection. "Those who have the desire to commit the necessary time and effort will receive help in obtaining their G.E.D. high school equivalency diploma."
