Cardiac Testing Available
COURT HOUSE - Nuclear cardiology has recently been added to the resources for patient care at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital. The service was made possible when the hospital opened a new nuclear medicine room earlier this year. The computerized state-of-the-art equipment offer ing superior images and advanced capability was designed to allow for the addition of more procedures. With the system expanded to include cardiac testing, physicians can now measure the chambers of the heart, evaluate specific cardiac functions, observe fluid around the heart, and detect changes from hardening of the arteries. INDIVIDUALS to be
scanned receive a small injection of radioactive isotopes. For a short period of time, the compound gives off minute amounts of energy. The gamma camera records these energy flashes, called scintiiations. to give an accurate and detailed image of the heart and blood vessels surrounding it. The computer analyzes the data and produces a visualization that allowk the radiologist and the cardiologist to observe the heart in action. The amount of radiation absorbed during the procedure is similar or less than that of a conventional x-ray. The benefits include a more exact diagnosis of heart disease and a method of evaluating progress toward recovery.
"The development of resources for cardiac care has been a priority here for some time." says William H. Waidron III, hospital president. "This is another step in that process. Within the past three years, we have also added one of the most sophisticated critical care units in the state, a new non-invasive cardiac laboratory, and new computerized ultrasound equipment."
