If there is no place like home for the holidays, we have two senior girls at LCMR who will be forced to make the best of whatever else there is during this joyous season. LuAnn Cherry will be celebrating the yule in Quito. Ecuador, and Ann Dalton will be exchanging presents under a tree in Madrid, Spain. Spending their senior year abroad has been a rewarding and exciting experience thus far for the girls and their families, but their absence will make it a very different holiday for loved ones here at home. LUANN IS IN Ecuador as part of the Rotary International exchange program. which is a competitive nationwide enterprise. Prior to selection, she had to fill out extensive applications and submit to a series of interviews that proved very successful for her and precipitated some very important decisions for her and her family. Once the decision was made to spend the year abroad there were decisions about college and concerns about where she would be placed. Currently LuAnn lives in Ecuador with a participating Rotary family and attends school in Quito, where she has made many friends. SHE CALLS home every three weeks to tell her fmaily about life in South America. Listening with enthusiasm and pride in her accomplishments are
: Alice, her mother, who ; teaches reading at I Teitelman School. James. > her father, who teaches Special Education classes at Consolidated school, brother James and sister ' JoElle. i Most of what they hear is i encouraging and infor- [ mative as they learn about i the Americanization of Quito, where LuAnn can shop at K-Mart. eat at Pizza Hut and watch American soap operas on television although the episodes are mostly two years old THEY HEAR about her heavy academic load and tiny senior class of nine, and they sense how much LuAnn misses some of the taken-for-granted pleasures of being home. She will return to graduate with her class in June prior to enrolling at LaSalle College in September. Ann talks to her mother. Evelyn Dalton, a Home Health Aid with the Holy Redeemer agency, three times a month from Madrid. She tells of her
wonderful family there composed of a father who is an engineer, a mother who is an aerobics teacher, a 9-year-old brother, and a 7-year-old sister. She loves her experience so far despite the fact that she has a half-hour walk to a metro followed by an hour trip to school each day. Her three years of Spanish here at LCMR have put her in good stead linguistically, and she is busily involved in a longdistance application process in efforts to enter Georgetown Universtiy next fall. The holidays will be emptier in the Dalton and Cherry households this year, but the season will be joyous nonetheless. These two families are buoyed by the fact that they have produced children with the courage to attempt something very special and we are proud of the manner in which they are reflecting the values of our school and community abroad.
