outdoors with Lou Rodia Axes Sharp Enough to Use Shaving
We have met a lot of fathers and kids who are close to each other But John Juranitch has absolute faith in his kids. He lets them shave him with an axe. John is an expert on the art of sharpening edged tools. We met him only once and have corresponded a little since. At an Outdoor Writers of America conference in
Phoenix, Ariz, some time ago. we saw John and family in action. To demonstrate the art of sharpening edged instruments. John and his son shaved each other with axes. . JOHN'S FASCINATION for sharpening began in 1951 when he was a barber in the U.S. Army. He springboarded quite a way

from that beginning interest. Today, he heads Razor Edge Systems. Inc. A part of that business is to set up sharpening systems in meat packing plants all over the world. Today, the firm is also expanding into the textile and film industries where poor edges on cutting instruments create waste. John comes from Ely. Minn., on the Canadian border in a wilderness ; area. He entertains at sportsman'a shows all over the country. At one time his act centered on sharpening a dull hunting knife and then shaving with it. Later, he spiced up the act by having a young girl sharpen the knife and shaving someone with it in a contest with a master barber. NOW. THE ACT centers on John's shaving himself or someone else with a dou-ble-bladed axe. He starts by sharpening the obviously dull axe Then the shaving cream is applied and the whiskers fall to the stroking of the finely-honed . axe. John has appeared on TV and demonstrated his prowess with the hone. He demonstrates the remarkable feat of sharpening a double bladed 1 axe and shaving with it in 14 minutes, starting with a dull axe. That show-stop-per has put him in the Guiness book of Records If you hanker to make it into the record books, here is a place you might want to make an effort. John has had years of experience in the art of sharpening things He noted in his last letter that even barber schools have dropped teaching sharpening and shaving because they are too difficult "YET. WE CAN do it (teach sharpening) in about a half hour." John said. Recognizing the im possibility of reaching everyone who needs sharpening advice per sonally. John has written a book It is called "The Razor Edge —Book of Sharpening" The book has over 250 detailed drawings
and photos to help teach tne novice or the" pro how best to sharpen edged instruments. In the book. John lays open a lot of the myths that surround knives and sharpening. He answers such questions as these: What is surgical steel? Is stainless steel better than carbon steel for knives? What kind of knife should I buy? What does oil do for sharpening? What kind of hones should I buy? Are knives sharp when you buy them? What about serrated knives? THE ANSWERS to these and lots of other questions are spelled out in the book So are questions and answers about sharpening axes, carpenter's plane blades, arrowheads, skinning knives, ice augers, fish hooks, scissors, sheath knives and chain saws. There is even a chapter on sharpening an adze. What is an adze? This tool was developed by the pioneers to smooth the surfaces of logs so the logs could be used for building cabins and the like. "The Razor Edge" is a wealth of information on sharpening and keeping edges on cutting instruments. We always thought we did a passable job on our things that cut until we met John and read his book Each year, we engage in a ritual which precedes hunting season We have a sheath knife which has served us well since 1946 We picked up the knife for about $2 in a surplus store It has opened cans, skinned and dressed deer and rabbits. cut branches, and tightened screws. It has been lost twice and found again I am probably on my third sheath. WE SHARPEN this knife just before the start of the hunting season and touch it up before the deer season. After reading "The Razor's Edge", we realized that we have a lot to learn about sharpening things. This year's results will be better after following the instructions in the book . John has offered the outdoor writers a chance to learn more about sharpening at the annual conference in Harrisburg in June. We'll be there, and plan to bring a knife. The seminar will feature instructions and demonstrations on how to put a proper edge on it. He also plans to get two volunteers from the writers' group with beards to demonstrate the art of sharpening. He will show them how to sharpen a dull butcher knife and then teach them to shave with it in some kind of a contest. The contest will allow the writers to compete in the contest using the beard on
e John's face as the proving »t ground. d TRUSTING YOUR kids to shave you with an axe is s one thing. Trusting some of it the outdoor writers I know d is quite another. I'm planns ing to be an observer. As for volunteering. I'm not s sure I'd try to shave myself n with a butcher knife, let ? alone anyone else. "The Razor Edge" is r available from Razor Edge if Books. Inc.. Box 150, Ely, e Minn., 55731. Send $12.50 y for the book plus $2 for d shipping and handling. If you are a knife user, or use tools professionally in your work, the money will be well spent. It is an even better investment if you plan to try to get ino the Guiness Book of Records by shaving yourself with an axe. Axe shaving might save you a lot of money on razor blades, but before you try it. we'd strongly suggest you read the book first. AND BY ALL means, don't try it on our say so. We started with Gilette ? blades at an early age and ? plan to stay with them for a long time to come. 1 Warner Books has a cou- ; pie of other books which ? might be of interest to out door people, particularly I those who back pack, camp i or hike. The first - is Roughing it Easy, written i by Dian Thomas. That book I sells for $3.95 i plus 50 cents ; for shipping and handling! ; The other book which Dian f wrote is Roughing it Easy. A THIRD WARNER book is filled with handy information on how to surI vive in the wilderness with only a knife. It can be done i and this book shows you how None of us plan to have to survive in the wilderness in this day and age. but we can and do get lost. If nothing else, books of ' this type do get one to thinking and a lot of the ideas come in handy in normal hunting, fishing, cam- ' ping and hiking, even if we do not get lost. Bushcraft. written by Richard Graves, is available from Warner Books at $3.95 plus 50 cents for handling and postage. Send a check or monev
order for the amount of your order to Warner Books, Box 690. 10019. Allow four weeks for delivery. BOOKS SUCH as these make for interesting reading. No matter how much we know, we can always learn more and we can always store what we learn until the time we actually need it. Reading is considered by some as a lost art. We are used to word pictures on television where our eyes and ears get a photo-audio message. Some say it is better. With all of the TV sets and all of the shows, the printed word is still outstripping all other forms of communication. Reading works well on a cold winter night when the fire is lit and it is quiet and the phone has settled down for the evening. The quantity and the quality of outdoor reading is improving tremendously. There are lots of good books and magazines out there to be read. While there are no real short cuts to craft improvement, reading is one way to learn. An hour or so with a book or magazine might offer you just one little tip which will make your hunting and fishing better. Try it.
