SPORTS by SUE McKinley County Teams Expected To be CAL Powerhouses

If you want to see the most competitive, exciting and interesting girl's basketball contests this season, you won't have to travel far. Cape May County boasts of four excellent teams and is predicted to be the home of the Cape Atlantic League title again this year. Middle Township clinched the title last year, Wildwood Catholic tied Sacred Heart for second place and Wildwood took third seat in the league. As I mentioned last week. Middle Township is stocked with everything from speed to greed. One could say it is a rebuilding year for the Panthers, but I wouldn't say coach Gary Barber is working with raw materials. Wildwood coach Dave Troiano hasn't been coaching nine years for the money so I'd say he's one guy due for a reward. This year's Warrior squad may have just the thing for Troiano. LAST YEAR the Warriors were 15-8 and a tough competitor in the Group I South Jersey finals. With three or four seniors filling starting positions for Troiano it looks like an all or nothing grip on the title this year. Seniors Ann Turner and Wendy Harkins are wearing Warrior uniforms for the fourth year. Turner, a five-foot-eleven-inch center, will be the chairman of the boards for Wildwood and a definite scoring threat. Harkins will be on the ball at the guard position. The dynamic dribbler has been seeing varsity action since her freshman year SENIOR FRANNY BARCAS is going to turn some « heads as the five-foot-L eleven-inch forward puts | her combination of talents ' [ to work Unlike many ► players. Barcas has equal r ability to shoot or drive. . making her a tough player > to stop. Sophomore Rose Hall is - another Warrior guard j with a good feel for the ball. ' Hall's ability to get the ball inside may be the key to the ( Warrior's success. The fifth starting position ; is still undecided. It's a r tough pick because senior Nicole Gambino and sophomore Sharon Sittineri are both good enough to wear the starter's shirt. Wildwood has two mentionable backups. Merry Stokes and Gini D'Maico i will be important contributors providing depth for the team, i Wildwood has more experience than Middle and Catholic so it should be interested to see if game time is a factor CAPE MAY COUNTY has a lot of good things to i say about Matt Tomlin's | coaching at Wildwood I Catholic, and I bet Cabrini \ College Salisbury State College. Stockton State College and Notre Dame have good things to say about him too.

Tomlin has produced a player for each of these colleges and several more. Could it be he knows what he's doing? I wouldn't doubt it. With a handful of juniors, it looks as if Tomlin will be producing a large college crop next year, but don't look beyond 1986. Last year's second place finish is still standing. Janis Boyle. Doran Vallese and Beth Gannon graduated last year and took a lot with them, including a 17-5 record. THIS YEAR the Crusaders have new starters, but nobody new to the court. Five-foot-ten-inch Katie Caruso and five foot eleven inch Hellen McBride will be leading Catholic this year with a strong inside force. The pair will be difficult to contend with under the boards.

Nicki Helverson and Doreen Di Dona to will be perimeter point poppers for the Crusaders and Cheri Libofski is the ball controller at the point. Ann Ferocco, Rene Herman and Jacki Steady won't exactly be picking splinters this season. The three have much to offer and will be called upon as key Crusaders. So far Wildwood, Wildwood Catholic and Middle Township have been the only names I've heard being whispered across the CAL table. However. Lower Cape May is never written off. The Capers don't make it easy for any team to boost their record. If it is going to be as close as it sounds, Cape May County won't be a fun place to visit for the rest of the £ AL teams.
