New Coaches Named
ERMA — Appointment of new coaches for the boys' and girls' basketball teams at Lower Cape May Regional High School has been announced. They are John McGaffney, boys' new mentor, and Edwin Fretz, girls' coach. McGaffney is a graduate of Mainland Regional High School and Glassboro State College. He has taught at Hammonton High School and since 1976, at Lower Cape May. Gymnastics Program Set CAPE MAY -The city is offering a comprehensive gymnastics program as part of the 1986 winter recreation schedule. This program is geared to beginning and i n - termediate students 14 years and younger. The classes will be held at the Franklin Street Civic Center 4-6 p.m. Wednesdays starting January 8. The first hour will be for ages 5 to 7 while the final hour will be devoted to ages 8 to 14. HE WAS girls' JV basketball coach at Hammonton High for one year. He was assistant football coach 1977-1984 and assistant boys' basketball coach 1976 to the present at Lower Cape May. As a player, he had two years on the varsity at Mainland and played at Atlantic Community College and Glassboro State College. McGaffney lives in Erma with his wife, Kathleen, and three children, Matthew, 13, Cari Lynn, 10, and Erin Shawn, 20 months. FRETZ. WHO lives in Fishing Creek, is a graduate of Norwin High School, North Huntington, Pa., and the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a B.S. in Chemistry. He has seven years of coaching experience with girls' grade school basketball. including the 1982-83 Our Lady Star of the Sea team, which had a 20-5 record and won the Cape May County CYO championship. Fretz is also active in various youth organizations, including girls' basketball at St. John of God. He is a member of the board of directors of the Cape May Little League and head coach of the Cape Express Under 14 Soccer Club.
Unbeaten Eckel's Tops Middle Loop
COURT HOUSE - Eckel's Diesel is currently riding a winning streak as the team sits on top of the Middle Township Men's Volleyball League. With only three weeks gone by. Eckel's is undefeated. Last season's champions, Rio Grande Building Materials, is keeping things tight with a good early-season form. It currently occupies second place. IN RECENT play, Rio Grande Building took three games from Keen Plumbing in a hotly contested set. Behind the spiking of Ernie Troiano and Rick Ferrante and the setting of Herb
Hudson and John Wilsey. Rio Grande proved to be too much for Keen's. In other play, Twiggs' Blinds defeated a muchimproved Wildwood Catholic Teachers team in three straight games. Twiggs', behind the sets of Gary Twiggs and the power spikes of the McKinleys. Jim. Tim and John, overpowered the Teachers, led by Joe Kubiak.
