Members of the Cape May County Fishermen's Memorial. Inc. are urging all residents and businessmen to remember the fishermen lost at sea and make a Christmas donation to the proposed fishermen's memorial. "We have already raised more than $40,000 toward our $160,000 goal and we are appealing to the public to help us in our endeavor," said Jeff Reichle, secretary of the memorial committee. "What greater gift to give?" Reichle said if all residents would get behind the drive, the permanent memorial to be located on the Cape May City harbor, will become a reality. COMMITTEE members recently requested the county freeholders to support the project and are awaiting their decision. The 11-foot high, 17-ton structure will feature a fisherman's wife standing with her daughter and son, looking out to sea. The monument will be surrounded at ground level by a mariner's "compass rose" which will accurate-

ly be set to the four cardinal points. Nationally known sculptor and artist Gerald Lynch of Cape May County has been commissioned for the project and is already working on the first casting. The memorial is scheduled for completion next spring. Once completed, the committee will turn their attention to establishing a nauticalmaritime museum on the harbor. "WHAT PEOPLE have to realize is how important the fishing industry is to Cape May County," .<&id Middle Township Mayor Michael Voll, a staunch supporter of the project. "Many fathers and sons have lost their lives to this industry and there is a need for recognition. The memorial and museum are great ideas," he said. Donations for the memorial are taxdeductible and can be sent to: Fishermen's Memorial, Box 997, Ocean Drive, Cape May, N.J. 08204. Contribution information can be obtained by calling 729-9050.
