By Arthur H. Schwerdt | If crowded mall shopping for Christmas has got you down, try a more leisurely route this weekend. Our antiques and gift shops are a ' special resource here in Cape May County not as readily available in other communities Not only is the shopping more relaxed, but you will find a great variety of unique gifts and stocking stuffers. and you may save some money in the process. Here are some ideas. House plants make great hostess gifts, and you can use your own cuttings Plant these cuttings in an American pottery planter, and not only will the plant increase in size hut the planter will increase in value. t
t RS §^MsC\ i \s / rCiT' 'TTf^ —J I THERE IS a great varie1 ty of shapes, sizes and col- ' ors available in these planters. For good value, look on the bottom for names like Abingdon. Hull, McCoy. Rookwood, or Roseville. If you are giving home baked goods, think of how much more valuable your presentation will be on an antique plate, dish or platter. There is a great variety available with names like Wedgewood. Limoges. Lenox, and Staffordshire. There are also many without the easily recognized names, but which are extremely beautiful and are sure to be cherished all year round. " OLD CROC KS, cannisters and tins also make good containers lor your home baked cookies, or even special things Irom the local bakery Just add a ribbon and a bow: some are so interesting you won't need to wrap them. Porcelain and ceramic fruit bowls and mixing bowls also make great gifts. Pick out some special fruits at the product market and decorate your arrangement with some nuts, pine cones and small sprays of evergreen. STORE-ROl (ill l or homemade jams, jellies and other gourmet food items can be arranged for giving in a valuable anti que basket at much less cost than a pre made basket You can also make up your own basket of cheer. Your creativity will be appreciated, and baskets are very collectible these days. Miniatures, paperweights. old toys. etc. make wonderful stocking stuffers. and often wind up being more memorable than larger, more expensive gifts THE COLLECTOR on your list will be easier to shop for if you are familiar with the type of item he or she collects. Take a good look around the next time you visit Describe these items to your local dealer and ask for some advice. Some dealers-' may be ! willing to write you up a ! gift certificate Your collector friend would love to browse around until he or she finds just the right thing for his or her collection So. write up your own gift certificate. promising to take your friend on a tour of all the antiques shops in Cape May County, and to contribute a certain sum to the purchase of a collectible ITEMS TH AT can be us ed in holiday entertaining will also be greatly appreciated. Look for relish dishes, serving dishes, special salt and pepper shakers, serving spoons, crumbers and the like. Cocktail shakers from the 30s and 40s. cordial glasses, wine glasses and snifters can all add a touch of old times while to ring in the New C Year 1 (Arthur Schwerdt, co- A of The A ugust Farm I house, on Route 9 in Swain - \ ton. invites questions c/o this newspaper I
