PRIOR TO his service with the county. MacLeod Bill Eases Security Deposits TRENTON - Landlords of seasonal rental property would no longer have to place tenants' security deposits in interest-bearing accounts under a bill sponsored by Sen. James R. Hurley, which passed the Assembly today. Hurley, R-Cape May, Cumberland, said, "I am pleased that this bill, which would eliminate some needless red tape for owners of shore homes, has finally passed the Assembly. I expect the Senate to concur this week with minor changes made by the Assembly and send the bill to Governor Thomas Kean for his signature. "THE CURRENT law concerning interestbearing accounts for security deposits was designed to protect tenants who rent a house or apartment for a year or more, not a week or two. It was aimed at making sure landlords do not make profits off security deposits," Hurley said. "If someone rents an apartment at the shore for a week, the interest gained on the security deposit would amount to only a few cents. It is a waste of time and money for landlords to go through the paperwork and red tape of establishing interest-bearing accounts when so little interest would be returned to the shore tenant." Under the bill, seasonal rentals are defined as property rented for no more than 105 consecutive days.
