Litter Control Bill Out of Committee
TRENTON - State Sen. James J Hurley. R Cumberland. Cape May. said last week he is op timistic his bill to establish a comprehensive litter control program in the Garden State will pass the legislature in the current session. "Persistence is paying off." Hurley said "Just last week, when the Senate Energy and Environment Committee failed to release the bill, I was con-
vinced my bill would never reach the governor's desk during this session." HURLEY SAID the committee has released his bill, which would fund a program of municipal, county and state litter patrols to clean up all kinds of debris, including beverage containers. "I have received assurances from Sen. Laurence Weiss (D-Essex) that the Senate Revenue. Finance and Appropriations Committee will con- ^ sider the bill within the \ next few days." Hurley ^ said. FT He said he is hopeful the 3 Senate will pass the bill and I send it on to Gov Thomas J Kean before Jan. 13. ( "THE GOVERNOR has made 1985 the Year of the Environment." Hurleysaid. "The enactment into law of my bill would be another significant step toward a clean New Jersey." Under the provisions of the law. litter patrols would be funded by a small tax on manufacturers and distributors of littergenerating producLs such as fast food containers and aluminum cans. "I believe my legislation, the Clean Communities Act. is the most effective and responsible approach to clean up litter." Hurleysaid. "IT WILL create jobs, not take them away, and it will clean up all kinds of debris, not just beverage containers, which account [ for only 15 percent of the solid waste." Hurley said his bill will also enhance municipal recycling efforts rather j [ than hindering them l "Finally, the small tax imposed on littergenerating products will be far less costly to consumers than a mandatory deposit on beverage containers." he said. Out of Boot VILLAS — Marine Pvt. Anthony J. Schwartz, son of Delores D Cranner of 37 Locust Rd.. has completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Par ris Island. SC.
