Candlelight House Tours Top Holidays

CAPE MAY - The high point of the city's holiday season is the 12th annual Christmas Candlelight House Tours scheduled Saturday 6 to 10 p.m. Sponsored by MidAtlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), the event features a self-guided tour of 14 homes, hotels and churches specially decorated for the holiday season. In order .to help tourgoers get from one house to another. MAC'S heated VI trolley-bus will run on a fi continuous transit loop throughout the course of the tour. ADVANCE TICKETS for the tour are available through Friday, at the MAC office at the Physick Estate. 1048 Washington St. The day of the tour, the cost of the tour rises. Tickets will be on sale at the Physick Estate, at the Washington Mall Information Booth (at Ocean Street), and during tour hours, at each participating house — marked by a large, orange banner. The 14 buildings featured on the tour include: Emlen Physick House, a massive 1881 stick-style house designed by famed Victorian architect Frank Furness. which now houses a unique Victorian museum operated by MAC. responsible for the continuing restoration of the structure. The house displays Victorian furniture, costumes, and arts, as well as special Christmas decorations. CARRIAGE HOUSE. 1050 Washington St. The home of the county Art League has on display a collection of gingerbread structures made by local residents. Ornate plaster ceilings are a striking feature There are hand-carved oak mantels on the corner fireplaces and lion heads carved on the newel posts of the stairway that is open to the third floor. The holiday decorations include a huge tree in the parlor with ornaments collected throughout the past 25 years by Bruce and Fran Prichard and their family, who are restoring the house as a bed-and-breakfast inn. Street, t Enter on Congress i Place) Congress Hall's hospitality is traced back to a small hotel built in 1812 by Jonas Miller. Thomas H. Hughes replaced Miller's hotel with Cape May's first large hotel in 1816. In 1878, a great fire razed 35 acres of Cape May's ocean-front property, including Congress Hall. The current hotel was built in 1879 by Edward Knight of Philadelphia and nicknamed the "Summer Home of Presidents." President Benjamin Harrison established Congress Hall as his summer White House and the hotel also hosted President James Buchanan. President Franklin Pierce and President Ulysses S. Grant. In { 1968. Congress Hall was acquired by Christian Beacon Press, and in 1974 it was I chosen by the National ( Park Service as a "Na- \ tional Historic f Landmark". Holly House, circa 1890. is one of seven identical buildings known as the Seven Sisters and operates as a year- l1 round guest house. Designed by Stephen ^ Decatur Button, the houses K face away from the street ^ and share a private couc- J tyard looking over the I ocean. The front porches > provide a quiet oasis in the > very center of Victorian 1 Cape May. % F 1 R S T UNIT E I) Presbyterian Church. Decatur and Hughes Street, of which Rev Cass Shaw is pastor This active congregation is in its third house of worship. The massive stone church was built for them in 1898 by George West, using the design of architect Isaac Purceli. The plan is handsome and simple: a square, entered on one corner, and focusing on the nave in the opposite corner, creating the opportunity to worship "in the round " The wooden ceiling and strongly articulated trusses and pews below accent each other nicely. The church is noted for its stained glass windows. CAPTAIN MEY'S Inn, 202 Ocean St. Built in 1890, this late Victorian home is being restored by Carin Fedderman and Milly LaCanfora. who named their bed-and-breakfast inn after Capt Cornelius Jacobsen Mey. the Dutch explorer who discovered Cape May in 1621.
