Dr. Richard L. Barab, a city dentist who was honored by City Council last week for 25 years service as a member of the city Board of Health, was mistakenly identified as a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea parish in last week's edition. While Dr. Barab in the past was a member of a county health program that treated children from parochial schools, he is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May where he is a church elder. A $380,000 bond issue approved last week by City Council will pay for installation of sewer and water pipes on Vermont Avenue, between Massachusetts and Pittsburgh Avenues, and on Wisconsin Avenue, from Massachusetts to Pittsburgh. It will also pay for linking the deadened water lines on Yacht and Harbor Avenues. To effect the hookup, a pipe will be laid across Devils Reach, a small bay. City Engineer Bruce Graham said the work on Vermont Avenue will be done this winter, but the project
on Wisconsin Avenue won't be done before the summer or fall. Graham said he is not certain when the Yacht Avenue work will begin. The road is scheduled to be paved next spring. City Council has canceled an emergency appropriation of $40,000 to meet increased insurance costs. The reason? The city has received a refund of $36,961 for a low loss ratio ( few claims) on workmen's compensation payments. Contractors bids to provide the city water system with liquid chlorine and chlorine tablets used for water purification will be received and opened on Jan. 6. Questioned by Robert Cunningham, treasurer of Cape May Taxpayers Association, City Manager Fred Coldren told a recent session of City Council that the city has spent $40,000 to pay socalled "comp time" to city employes. Coldren said that $11,500 of the total went to settle claims for back pay made by members of the
police department. In a practice which the city has since discontinued, employes were offered time off for any extra days they worked. The employes who were paid for the accrued time had never used it. Coldren pointed out that the amount paid to clear back time off the books was one-half what the city paid in overtime in 1976. Public Works Assistant Superintendent Jerry Inderwies reports that his department has spent $7,214.52 so far this year to keep police cars in operation, and used 378 manhours to do it. Inder wies said it is "imperative" that three of the five police cars be replaced as soon as possible. Inderwies has notified Council that a city-wide road patch program is needed. He said he would like to discuss several ways of doing the work before there are hearings on next year's budget. Code Enforcement Officer (Page 12 Please)
