Sloan Dismisses Charges by Rival
AVALON - Mayor | , Rachel Sloan dismissed the j charges made by James H. ; Redditt who announced his • candidacy for Mayor of |Avalon in the recall elec- , j tion scheduled for Jan. 28. "Mr. Redditt is mis1 informed concerning the .issues of the building moratorium of July 1983 and subsequent improvements to the sewer 'plant". Mayor Sloan said. "Under Avalon's form of -government, the Borough Council is the legislative authority for appropriating funds and initiating projects. In charging me with the sole responsibility for the building moratorium and expenditures to im- ' prove the sewer plant, it is
obvious that Mr. Redditt ■ does not understand the duties and responsibilities of the office of mayor," Sloan continued. JACK WARREN, chairman of the Committee Against Recall (ACAR) expressed his support for Borough Council's actions in 1983. "Borough Council acted judiciously and with foresight when they imposed the moratorium and
authorized funds for the improvement of the sewer plant. Under the leadership of the mayor, the council took prompt action. Without these decisions, Avalon could very well be experiencing the same environmental problems as our neighbor. Wildwood," said Warren. During Sloan's two-and-one-half year term, she has established a full-time
Christmas Tree -J*. Tips for Safety
Martin Luther is believed to have started the tradition of decorating an evergreen tree for Christmas in Germany in the 16th century. He was recreating a forest scene of a lovely everygreen garlanded with snow on a starlit evening. The candles he placed on the boughts captured the beauty of starlight. Today, few people are foolish enough to use open flames on the trees indoors, a serious fire hazard. According to Larry Newbold. Cape May County Agricultural Agent a few simple, sensible precautions can be taken in selecting and caring for Christmas trees that will ensure the safety of your
family through the holiday season. FIRST AND foremost, avoid having a dry tree (one on which the needles are a dull grayish green color, have lost their elasticity, and no longer ooze fragrant pitch when crushed) in the home. That means — get a fresh tree by cutting your own or by carefully inspecting the stock at a roadside stand. Short-needled spruces and firs and long-needled pines are often chosen. Do not be shy about shaking out trees which have been wrapped with string or netting — their shape will become apparent, and you can check for falling needles — a sure sign of a dry tree. WHEN YOU have chosen a tree which pleases you (keep in mind that a tree which is placed in a corner \ can get away with having one bad side>, store the I] tree in a cool place away II from sun and wind and J place in a bucket of water, f When you are ready to set } it up. make a fresh cut ' across the trunk to help the plant's vascular system absorb water — which it will do, up to a quart of water a day. So check the water reservoir daily, and make sure it I is clean. In a sense, your tree is like a giant cut I flower — the longer it is out of water, the quicker it will wilt. I Do not place the tree \ near any heat source. That I includes fireplaces, wood I stoves, radiators, and even I the television. Always use ' fireproof decorations. Keep tinsel clear of light sockets. \ CHECK OUT the lights j before you put them up. I Replace rather than patch A lights with brittle, cracked I insulation. Buy only sets J that are wired in parallel and have the Underwriter's Laboratories label on them. Do not overload circuits. Unplug the tree when you leave the room even for , a short time. Perhaps most I I importantly, remove the I tree when it has begun to H dry out and lose needles. I These safety tips can I mean the difference betM ween a Happy New Year Jl and no New Year at all.
rescue squad: developed a strong recreational program for all ages; secured over $8 million in state and federal funds for beach restoration; successfully managed the crisis of potential destruction and the subsequent recovery from the storms of 1984 and 1985. Warren said. She has significantly contributed to defeat of the recently proposed legislation which would have imposed a room tax for hotels/motels and taken 10% of beach tag revenues to fund beach restoration; published a semi-annual report to Avalon residents, and closely monitored Avalon's sewage treatment plant, keeping the town's beaches and bays safe for swimming. Jishing and boating, he declared.
