County Fishing Tourney Start Set

COURT HOUSE - The 51st Cape May County fishing tournament gets under way Jan. 1, and runs through to Dec. 31. 1986. with prizes to be offered in over 30 categories of fresh and salt water fish commonly caught on the Jersey Cape The tournament is sponsored annually by the Cape May County Board of Freeholders and is one of the oldest fishing tournaments in the country. Freeholder Herbert C. Frederick, who is director of the Cape May County Department of Public Affairs. said the year-round contest is designed to draw attention to the fine offered on the Jersey Cape. THE TOURNAMENT was expanded to a yearround event several years ago as part of the county's promotional effort to ex-

tend the tourist season. Excellent spring and fall fishing opportunities exist each year in Cape May County waters. Through the contest, anglers are afforded the opportunity to earn citations and bronze award recognition pins for fish caught above a minimum weight They also can compete for over 100 fishing tackle prizes awarded annually for the biggest three fish in each category recognized in the tournament. FISH R ARE to Cape May County waters are also recognized with citations and pins. The judges also select the fish which is considered most rare for a special award. Striped bass, which are one of the sportsfishing fraternity's favorite game fish, will not be eligible for prizes in this year's tournament. The policy was set in 1985 as part of an effort to help take the fishing pressure from the striped bass. IT WILL remain as a tournament policy as long as the striper's existence is threatened. It is hoped that by keeping the pressure off the striped bass, the numbers of bass will bounce back all along the Atlantic Coast. Winners in the 1985 tournament will be announced as soon as they are tabulated by a team of judges made up of some of the area's outstanding outdoor writers and fishermen. Those who receive prizes will be notified by mail and prizes will be sent to them. A list of prize winners for the 1985 event will be published in the county's annual tide table and directory of weighmasters which will be available early in the upcoming year. THERE IS NO advance registration or entry fee for the county-wide fishing event. Anglers need only to catch their fish in Cape May County waters and bring it in to one of the more than 80 weighmasters to be

certified on an official fishing contest entry blank. Anglers can enter as many fish as they choose. Each fish entered is recognized with an official1 contest entry badge. Fish over the minimum weights will receive a contest recognition pin and a citation. Contest officials urge anglers to enter their fish with an official weighmaster to have the weight and measurements verified. SEVERAL STATE or International Game Fish Association records were lost for the individual fishermen when fish which would have topped existing records were not weighed in. Most recent fish to get state record certification through entry in the Cape May tournament was the 77-lb. amberjack boated by Harry J. Brandenstein, of Haddon Heights. Brandenstein's fish was caught in October on a trip near 3FB Buoy off the Jersey Cape coast. He was fishing on the party boat Capt. Robbins with Capt. Neil Robbins. out of Sea Isle City, when the big amberjack took a red splittailed Banana rig. He subdued the fish in a 40-minute battle. THE FISH WAS entered into the Cape May County fishing tournament. The papers needed to qualify it for record status were prepared and submitted in the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, which recently notified Brandenstein that his fish was an official state record. He was assisted in the filing process by the county Public Affairs Department and the county Department of Weights and Measures, which certified the scales on which the fish was weighed.
