Don't Limit Thoughts To the Star and Manger j
By CLARE CAMPBELL We're always hearing that Christmas is a time for remembering. I'll buy that! And in many fine greeting cards we see sleighs and fireplaces, the older the better. painted. Lovely! Of course each of us has bright memories. I often think of my first sled under my Christmas tree when I was six, and that very special Christmas when we visited Grandmother Deborah. There were oranges and peanuts in her big "slip ware" pieplate. ORANGES! It was really Christmas! And peanuts! My mother said: Clare, don't get those peanut shells all over Granny's clean rag carpet." Granny's answer was so wise and comforting I remember it to this day. She said. "Oh. peanut shells are CLEAN DIRT." I RECALL the Christmas my father brought me CHOCOLATE ALMONDS! And miraculously. I still can. and DO. wear the ring with my birthstone in it that mv brother gave me when I was TWELVE! Oh. yes. wonderful memories of "Christmas past." but let's not stop there. Perhaps some of you pick up your Bible now and then. I hope you do. Then again, perhaps it's been quite a while since you've "had time to dp much reading."
Now I have my own ideas of celebrating Christmas, as I'm sure you do. First of all, I believe it should be celebrated year round. Oh, not by bringing in trees to decorate and wrapping a lot of presents every week. NO. bv THINKING CHRISTMAS! AND HERE'S WHERE the memories sparkle. Let's not limit our thoughts to The Star and The Manger in December. Neither should we relegate the beautiful stories of Jesus to the very back of our minds until "next year." You remember the story of Zacchaeus. don't you? He longed to see Jesus, but, being "of little stature" he could not see over the heads of the crowd. So he climbed a tree! A sycamore, and we have several of them here. A sycamore is just right for sitting in. Its branches are smooth and often almost horizontal. So Zac climbed the tree He didn't yell down, "Hey, Jesus, see me up here?" But, of course Jesus saw him and how about what He said? "Zacchaeus, come down, for today I shall abide in thy house." Now what do you make of that? Can it mean that we should "climb up" and make a REAL effort? AND REMEMBER when Jesus healed 10 lepers'' Ten came to Him for help and only one remained to thank
him. Nine ran off! You recall the observation that Jesus made to that? All he said was, "Where are the others?" Notice He didn't say they were ungrateful. And He certainly didn't say, "After all I did "for them!!" How do we react sometimes when the little things we do for people go unappreciated? This bears thinking about, doesn't it? There was another glorious day when Jesus fed 5,000! Now notice: He never did things by halves — They picked up 12 baskets of leftovers and all those 5,000 did not get just a taste; the Bible says "They did eat and were filled." HOW ABOUT Marv who
sat at Jesus's feet, even though her sister thought she should be busy with the many mundane chores'' Jesus said "Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." Oh, He knew all about priorities, didn't He? Should we lay aside our dust cloths, our tools and our transactions and choose that good part, and often? Yes, indeed! Christmas is a time for remembering, but let us not observe it only on December the Twentyfifth. Let's be sustained by Christmas throughout the year.
