Season openers provided quite a preview to this year's hoop competition on both the girls' and boy's courts. The starter's gun sound- 1 ed Dec. 20 and a few teams 1 , received early Christmas ' presents in the form of victory. | In the gentlemen's gym Wildwood slaughtered Hammonton 78-27. A 13-2 first quarter lead i put "the Warriors in the ] driver's seat for the entire game. The Blue Devils, low on t ammunition with five , players out of action due to injuries, were able to hit for only 11 points by the i half. Wildwood owned a i comfortable 33-11 lead. WARRIOR Torey Harris i led with 20 points. Steve Severior popped 16 for the < winners and Pete Johnson < added 11. i Hammonton's Darren j Maimone went down j fighting with 11 points for ; the losers. < Wildwood Catholic boys ■, pulled one off to start the season as they outshot f Buena for a 62-53 victory. t Sixteen of 24 foul shots i gave the Crusaders the i edge and Alex Mairone n gave them everything else with his 24-point donation. e Mairone scored ten of his i team's 12 third period p points, outscoring Buena 20-15. c Jeff Barnes connected S

for 15 and Joe Bada added 12. Bada also worked under the boards, pulling down 10 for the Crusaders. OCEAN CITY and Lower Cape May got off to a bad start, both falling short in their respective games. The Raiders suffered a four-point loss to Bridgeton 58-54. John McClellan earned 16 points for Ocean City but it wasn't enough to givethe their first w in. Lower Cape May was just as close to success when it fell by five to St. Joe 44-39. St. Joe's Matt Alessi and Dave Calloway led the winwith 14 and 15 counters respectively. Ken York helped the Capers with four buckets. THE GIRLS' teams that opened on the 20th were not exactly perfect matchups. 20 and 30 point wins, it's easy to say who the good teams are. Wildwood and Ocean City dealt crushers to Hammonton and Bridgeton. The Warriors took the period from Hammonton 23-10 thanks to an inside-outside combo of Frani Barcas and Ann Barcas and collected eight and Turner hit for six the first eight minutes of play. The Blue Devils didn't die quickly. Barbara j Sbarra and Nellie Crux struck back from a 31-18 defecit with four unanswered goals. Sbarra was unstoppable from 15 feet as she consistently hit the long jumpers. Her shooting arm didn't rest until intermission and even then it wasn't for long. THE WARRIORS came out strong in the second half and showed a 2-2-1 press that shook the Blue Devils into a panic. Hammonton turnovers and Warrior executions put the lead back to 15 at 43-28. The final period made the decision after four

minutes of play and a 13-0 shoot out (Wildwood). Barcas finished with 18 points and Turner ended the game with 18 for the victory. Ocean City girls started their season with a 46-29 win over Bridgeton. THE LADY RAIDERS were carried by Lisa Gampton's 20 points. She hit for eight in the final quarter to break open the game and secure the win. vJudy Eckerson accounted for 11 Raider points and LaRae Newton led Bridgeton with 14. Lower Cape May suffered an opening loss to St. Joe 61-25. The Capers were outscored 16-4 in the third quarter, making it impossible to retaliate in the fourth. Caper Colleen Pietrewski collected 11 but St. Joe's guns were unmatchable. Joanna Sulmonetti popped 10, Tiffany Unger connected for 11 and Gina Comerford led all scorers with 14 loops. THE SURPRISE of the week was Wildwood Catholic's three-point loss to Buena 39-36. The favored Crusaders had a tough time trying to

I stop Gayanne Spivey. who totaled 22 points for the i night. I Kelley Caruso and Ellen McBride were Catholic's strength with 15 and 14 I points but were unable to i bear the entire load.
