tainer of international renown walk on stage to an eager audience, waiting in anticipation to hear him, and be greeted by a microphone stand — minus the microphone. Of course, that didn't throw old Julio, he's made of sterner stuff. He quipped. "This is like going to bed and there is no pillow." He bent down to pick up the detached mike from the floor, but there was no sound. He smiled through clenched teeth as a stagehand ran out with another microphone. Then the music began. I recognized one of my favorites. "Begin the Beguine." He started to sing. The music swelled. Julio stopped. "It's too high," his famous voice whispered. (I think he meant it was too "loud" ) THE SHOW continued. After another song, he stopped once again to say it didn't "feel right", that he needed "goosebumps" to perform well. (Someone in the audience offered hers to him.) He paced up and down the stage front to renew his energy. Then he grabbed a stool to sit and chat with us. Several women screamed. Julio told us he is still not comfortable with the intricacies of the English language. His vulnerability was evident, but so also was his quick wit. A woman called out an offer to tutor him. He cued the band, and was ready to sing again. After only a few measures, he got his "goosebumps " So did we. Halfway through the next song, an offering in Spanish, he strolled to stage right and BOOM! It was either a mishap in the sound system, or an exploding flashbulb that the audience had been requested NOT to use. In the midst of Spanish lyrics, we could hear Julio's English, "I'm afraid of that side of the stage. I'll stand in the - ywww y re

center where I am safe." The words fit perfectly into the melody, as the song played on. AT THIS point the audience roared. We weren't sure if it might not be part of the act. T Then more songs and now there were no more interruptions. When he left the stage the applause was thunderous. We waited for his reappearance, but no Julio. We were all wondering if it is a European custom not to return when your audience is obviously not yet finished with you? ENCORE! We consumers wanted mor^! Well, he did return, but the short time left was mass confusion. A handicapped woman at the front table tried to get into her wheelchair, but her helpful husband had neglected tc put on the brake. I reached forward to grab the chair and help her. By then, women .from
further back were approaching the stage. Their desire tcr get closer obliterated their sense of common 'courtesy. They were showering flowers, dolls and envelopes^ Julio responded with a kiss to each donor. Three women from my table were thus rewarded! HE HAD done his job and had done it well. He had pleased his audience with an excellent performance. We had glimpses of his soft spots. He, like the rest of us mortals, is not always sure of himself. He, too, experiences doubts. I left, feeling I had been entertained by* a good friend, and inspired to try to do a better job myself. If you would like to spend New Year's Eve with Julio Inglesias (and 299 other people), contact the New York Essex House. It's only $2,000 each. If, on the other hand, you can wait, he'll be back as Resorts in February. Good Luck!
