(From Page 28) moratorium could be implemented by the legislature. The state could go to a 33-inch minimum to meet suggested goals to preserve the 1982 breeding stock as suggested by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. The state could adopt a 30-inch minimum in 1986 and a 37-inch minimum in 1987 WE ATTENDED a meeting in Toms River
.Saturday, Dec. 7, to listen to New Jersey fishermen's ; reactions to these proI posals and to get suggesi tions from the anglers as to i what they want their state [ representatives to do. We drew a broad conclusion from the meeting. That is that a group of i greedy anglers who do not want to. give up their "right" to catch and sell striped bass are unwilling to support any sensible regulation in an effort to get the striper back into shape again so all of us can enjoy fishing as it was in the "good old days" when there were lots of stripers around. What they want is a market where they can sell their fish and unlimited right to catch them with I rod and reel. They want the | right to sell their fish and I they want commercial I metting stopped completely. Thus, their fish would be worth even more. There would be that much more of a market for them since most of their competition would be eliminated. TRUE SPORTSMEN (those who do not care to sell their fish) are releasing all the stripers they catch. They should be as loud in their support of a no sale or a further catch restriction, or even a moratorium on stripers for a while in the hope that the fish come back. 41 Meanwhile, out there somewhere in the striper fraternity is someone who will become famous if the ! stripers do not come back soon. He or she will be the one who is remembered for having caught the last striper. Will it be you?
