Mainland Beats Middle 58-53

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON is over and the holiday tournaments were sufficient entertainment during the vacation. J The Middle Township Panther Classic featured a boys' basketball championship game with Mainland. Mainland outlasted the

Panthers and captured first place in an overtime battle. Panthers Dion Coley, Maurice Hubbard, Mike Watkins and Eddie Bryan hit double figures to keep Middle in the race during regulation time. MAINLAND TOOK A 58-53 victory behind 21

points from Ron Flowers and 18 from Larry Jackson. Jackson was voted MVP for the tourney. THE GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP game of the Panther Classic didn't include Middle Township. The Panthers fell to Mainland in game two, 49-59. The final event was a neck and neck race between Wildwood and Mainland, ending in Wildwood's favor, 29-23. An 18-14 halftime score doesn't sound like an exciting offensive contest, but it wasn't boring. Early in the fourth quarter, Wildwood's Frani Barcas made her move and started connecting after a long streak of misses. Barcas hit a layup, a corner jumper and a 10-footer to put Wildwood up 23-22. Mainland's guns froze and players missed their next 14 attempts at the basket. Besides getting frustrated and running out of time, they were unable to slow Barcas down once she got rolling. Barcas and Nicole Gambino secured the win just before time expired by sinking a pair of crucial free throws. Barcas was named MVP of the tourney. OCEAN CITY GIRLS took first place in an Absegami Christmas tournament. Lisa Crompton led the •\ Raiders with 15 to boost jOcean City's record to 3-0. J Vicki Miller and Pam ( MacFarland combined for 25 points for the winners. MacFarland was named MVP for the tourney.

REGULAR SEASON games are back in stride and just about every team in the county played Friday afternoon. Unfortunately they didn't alLwin. In boy's action, there were three victories and a loss. Wildwood Catholic, Middle and Lower Cape May were the teams on top. Catholic slipped past Absegami 71-64 after fighting back from an eightpoint deficit. Gary Melton tallied 26, Alex Marione had 22, Joe Bada scored 16, Dan Leahy popped 15 and Jeff Barnes collected 14 for the winners. Middle Township Panthers enjoyed a comfortable victory over Pleasantville 76-62 behind Maurice Hubbard's 24 points. Mike Watkins added 18 and Chris Sellers finished with 10 for Middle. LOWER CAPE MAY put the pressure on Sacred Heart for a 54-35 victory. A full court press gave the Capers an 18-4 first quarter advantage. Marcello Mogavero led the Capers with- 13 and Pete Babore hit for 11. Lower remained on control for the entire four quarters. On the girls' court, it was a tough week for county teams. Ocean City. Middle and Lower all fell prey to their opponents. Ocean City was defeated 62-58 by Atlantic City in a Division 1 contest. Atlantic City's Wendy Levy collected 19 points for the win Tracy Fiedler and Paula Glass each hit for 11. The Raiders were led by Lisa Crompton's 17 points. Middle's girls suffered a 52-47 loss to Pleasantville The Greyhounds outscored the Panthers 15-6 in the final period. Lavonne Rice tallied 14 for the winner Michele Greenwaldt, Ronnie Lynn and Bev Grant each had 12 points for the Panthers. Lower Cape May was the third losing team last week. The Capers managed to score only 15 points in the contest and fell 42-15 to Sacred Heart. Gretchen Ritter popped 23 for the winners. The only win in the county on Friday ( for girls ) was a Wildwood Catholic nail biter with Absegami. The Crusaders pulled off a one-point victory (48-47) on a Kate Caruso bucket with 58 seconds remaining. Caruso led the Crusaders with 22 points. Let's hope things pick up for Cape May County girls' basketball.
