J ' Continuing our series on ) blood. today we will begin a discussion on anemia. Anemia is defined as a shortage of red blood cells } or hemoglobin. There are accepted normal values when you have your blood tested The accepted level for women happens to be slightly lower than that for men. Also, levels appropriate for babies or children can differ from those of adults. There is more than one form of anemja. Common types include iron-defici-ency, B12 deficiency and folic acid deficiency, sitk-le-cell anemia, thalassemia, and hemolytic anemia. THE SYMPTOMS of . most types of anemia are quite similar. These include: feeling weak, tired, faint and/or breathless The person may look pale I Some people feel their | heart is pounding faster than usual. This is often a result of the heart's trying to pump blood faster than normal to make up for the shortage of red blood cells or hemoglobin. I When your hemoglobin ^result is markedly abnor kTmal, or you report the ^ symptoms listed above, it

i becomes important to i search for the cause of your low "blood count." i ,\NEMIAS MAY repre i sent not only a blood disease, but may be a sign of another serious underly- . ing condition For example. iron deficiency anemia i may be caused by bleeding from the digestive tract. Blood can be lost via bleeding ulcers, gastritis, cancer of the stomach or large intestine diverticulosis. dilated blood vessels (varices), polyps or hemorhoids. Blood could also be lost via the kidneys in microscopic amounts undetected over a long period of time, or in obvious quantities of red blood discoloring the urine (hematuria). This could be a symptom of urinary tract rumors, infections, or a traumatic injury. Next week we will discuss the various types of anemias. Health Watch is a public education project of the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beitman is president. Letters to the doctor can be addressed c/o his office, 108 N. Main St., Cape May Court House. N.J. 08210.
