SPORTS by SUE McKinlev Wild wood Girl Hoopsters Suffer First CAL Loss
Wildwood's girls hoopsters hit the headlines last week and gave Middle Township something to smile about. The Warriors suffered their first loss, which puts the Panthers back in the race for the Cape Atlantic League (CAL) title. It was a one point tear jerker for the Wildwood fans as Buena knocked off the favored Warriors 30-29. Warrior Ro6e Hall hit a crucial foul shot which gave Wildwood a 29-28 advantage with 17 seconds remaining. FOR THOSE WHO never played the game, 17 seconds seems like an eternity when you are on defense. For an optimistic offense, it's plenty of time
to win a ball game. Buena intended to do just that. Bayanne Spivey received an inbounds pass, drove the ball down the court and hit Rose Seda for a point blank upsetter. Middle Township and Wildwood now have one loss apiece in the league. Wildwood did collect two wins last week; the first a 62-17 demolition of Lower Cape May. Ann Turner paced the Warriors with 15 points. The Wildwood leader canned 12 in the first stanza to give Wildwood a 20-2 lead and also hauled down 15 boards for the winners. The Warrior's second arrow struck Wildwood Catholic after a neck and neck battle for three
quarters. THE KNOCKOUT CAME swiftly in the fourth. Wildwood staggered the Crusaders with a 15-1 scoring explosion, earning *a 38-27 victory. Franni Barcas hit six of her 11 points in the final eight minutes and Ann Turner collected four of her 11 points in that span. The Warrior defense held Catholic star Kate Caruso to three points. The Crusaders were led by Hellen McBride, who picked up the slack with 11. The lady Panthers of Middle Township haven't exactly been sweeping their opponents off the court, but they've been winning. A 60-42 crusher over Sacred Heart was a blow out in Panther terms. Bev Grant had the basketball most of the
game; If she didn't, it was in the net. The Panther senior, probably the best guard in the CAL. hit for 26 points and a handful of assists. Panther Betsy Gilbert ripped down 13 rebounds and added 10 counters to the win. Kara McVey chipped in 10 for Middle and Gretchen Ritter led the Hearts with 23 points. EARLIER IN THE WEEK Middle enjoyed a seven point taker from St. Joe. The Panthers were propelled once again by Bev Grant with 17 sinkers. At the end of the third period. Middle trailed 24-23 as Gina Commerford canned three buckets in the stanza But Grant struck back with eight of her • team's 14 fourth quarter points. Cori Osborne, who has been spending a lot of time on the sick-bench, was feeling fine that afternoon as she put 10 points in the scorebook and controlled the Panther boards. The final Panther blow of the week was due to some accurate guns. While Absegami was concentrating on Panther star Bev Grant, Middle used secret weapons Michelle Greenwalt and Kara McVey to pick up the pieces. Greenwalt, a freshman, consistently sunk 20-foot bombs from the right while McVey struck with missies from the left. Greenwalt led the Panters with 15 perimeter pops while McVey added 14. GRANT WASN'T quite stopable, Add* collected 12 for the wmner. Wildwood Catholic downed Hammonton 52-45 behind Kate Caruso's 22 second half points. The Crusaders outscored the Blue Devils 36-28 in that period. Caruso grabbed U boards while Nicole Helverson pulled eight. Ellen McBride backed Caruso with 11 points and Nelli Cruz scored 24 for Hammonton. Pleasantville romped over Lower Cape May 62-30. Linda Conaver tallied 22
points in the losing cause. In Boys basketball, Wildwood Catholic downed Hammonton 65-43 by striking from all directions. Chris Koch collected 11 points, Alex Mairone canned 10 and Joe Bada hit for 9. The Blue Devils were topped by Darren Maimone's 14 points. The Crusaders picked up another victory by knocking off Wildwood 59-54. AFTER A SLOW START and an 11 point deficit, the Crusaders fought back to a 41-41 tie after three quarters. Dan Leahy led the rally vrith seven of his 27 points in the final frame. He also grabbed 14 rebounds for the Crusaders (6-2). Alex Mairone contributed 15 in the win. Torey Harris led Wildwood with 27 and Paul
Franco finished with 13. Middle Township ha<f a good week, beginning with a 73-45 romp over Sacred Heart. The 23-9 second quarter score set the Panthers up for an easy day. Dion Coley led the Panthers with 18 counters while Eddie Bryan and Maurice Hubbard each sunk 12. Sacred Heart's leader was Joe Rabemberg with 20 nets over the Panther defense. LATER IN THE WEEK. Middle put another 75 points up in lights and ran over Absegami. who netted 61. It was Dion Coley leading the Panther Pack again as he accounted for 25 points. Paul Franco swept the boards for 16 rebounds and added 12 points to the winning team. Lower Cape May collected two losses by falling to St. Augustine 71-58 and Pleasantville 48-47. The Capers were not completely unsuccessful! last week. A 66-57 win over Wildwood gave them a bit of a spark. It happened on the foul line as Lower hit 15 freebies in the fourth frame to secure a nine point win. Caper Ed Leo ran the show with 16 points, ten of which came from the foul stripe. Mark Shiffbauer. Pete Babore and Kevin Moore each scored in double figures for Lower. Warriors were led by Paul Franco's 15 points.
