The 1986 Knowledge Bowl Season is underway. The first round in the 12-week tournament took place Jan. 21, with Margaret Mace School plying its mental talents against the selected students from Middle Township. Winner of the first round. Margaret Mace -515 to 420. The series will again be sponsored by Diller & Farina Real Estate and will be televised on Channel 2 each Wednesday at 6 p.m. You may also view the competition a few days after it takes place by tuning into Channel 2 on Monday evening 7 p.m. • The competitions are exciting and afford an opportunity to view some very bright junior high school students. ISLANDERS WHO par ticipated in last week's competition from Margaret Mace School were John Carlson, Keith McGee, Frank McDermott, Rocky Scavetta, Amy Gallagher. Brad Morton. Pat Bell. Irv Watson was team manager. Coached by Francis St. John and Deborah Martinelli, the Margaret Mace Team will reappear on the schedule during the Sixth week when they are slated to compete against the team from St. Ann's. Several weeks ago. I mentioned that if any beaches were closed along

i Five Mile Beach, groups such as Harry Greiner's ; Priority One will be i breathing down the politii cians' necks. Whew! It seemed like an innocent > enough statement, but I rarely have I said anything . that attracted so much at- . tention and caused more comment. I was really caught off guard. . First, I received a call from Crest resident Ed I McGowan, who informed me that the beaches have I never been closed! He said that it sounded as if I wrote for the Inquirer and that I should remain more accurate in my reporting. I OCCASIONALLY receive calls from Ed and he is always right when he calls, but this time I knew I had him as I distinctly remember a problem we had this past season. Wrong! McGowan proceeded to explain ^ to me that the beaches remained open all season and were never closed! The waters were off-limits for a week or so but the beaches were OPEN! McGOWAN. WHO helped staff the Wildwood Crest Information Center this past summer, said that the entire "crew" at the center decided to make the pollution problem seem as insignificant as possible. As they fielded the thousands of phone queries last season, they minimized the impact by stressing the open beach and downplaying the water problem by stressing the acres of clean pools that appear on the island THE STAFF at the center even attempted to convince the motel owners with pools to share their facilities with motel owners who didn't. I think their handling of last season's problem is commendable and they should be noted for their efforts, as they obviously did the multi-million dollar business/tourism industry a huge favor! The Wildwood Crest Information Center is on RamblenRoad at the beach in the Nqsbitt Center. Last season. Mayor Frank McCall offered the staffing responsibilities to the local Senior Citizens group They accepted and under the direction of Mrs. Jessie Taggart did a most commendable job. My compliments to the group, and to McGowan for "straightening me out". Joseph Visalli's quest for the Superior Court judgeship left vacant by the death of Charles Sandihan took one large step forward last week as the Senate's Judiciary Committee unanimously approved his appointment. The approval of Visalli by the committee opens the doors for the State Senate to vote on "Judge Joe's" nomination to the Family Court position. Visalli resides in Wildwood Crest with his wife Jane and their unbelievably cute daughter Lauren. j The word is out: Bradley Blubaugh has been named business administrator for I the City of Wildwood.

replacing Marc Pfeiffer. Blubaugh. comes to Wildwood from the small community of Stroudsburg, Pa. and is Wildwood's second business a d - ministrator is in the less than 3-year history of the •'new form of government." Blubaugh will be assuming full-time duties beginning with the week of Feb. 12. We wish him well in his new position. I RECENTLY learned of a proposed high-speed rail system linking Pittsburgh. Harrisburg, and Philadelphia. The plan, begin spearheaded byPhiladelphia's Mayor Goode. will feature a modern, state of the art, 180 MPH rail system that will make the trip from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia in less then three hours! Obviously, the rail system would link up with the proposed PhiladelphiaAtlantic City system. That makes the trip from Pittsburgh and parts inbetween to Atlantic City very convenient. I mention these proposals only as a point of information a$ I wonder how and why the Cape MayWildwood area can be so regularly and continuously omitted from any consideration with a modern rail link. It is almost as the world ends about 30 miles "up the road." In fact, I sometimes wonder how in the world we ever managed to convince the state to extend the Parkway this far south. ON OCCASION, I really think that the two lights on the Parkway are the state's way of saying. "OK, we'll give you a major highway, but unlike the rest of the state, we're going to put two traffic lights in your county!" The point remains that as the rest of the world receives serious consideration for mass transit hookups the Wildwoods get the cold shoulder. That is a shame. If there is merit to a

trans-Pennsylvania system - and a "sister link" to . Atlantic City, there is merit to a spur connecting Cape t May County. Oh to "newsy notes" and things to do: Don't forget the "Miss Kitty" night being sponsored by the PTA from St. Ann's. It is scheduled for Feb. 8. Another Wildwood event sponsored by a school organization is Wildwood Home and School Association's annual hoagie sale Feb. 1 at the Glenwood Avenue School. For further information, call 729-0456. I HAVE mentioned to North Wildwood efforts to upgrade and beautify the Hereford Inlet area and in particular the Lighthouse section. It is an excellent project and now you have / the opportunity-I^O-participate. Chairman of t TTe Lighthouse Committee, Steve McDonald, is asking any and all Islanders for assistance in decorating the lighthouse for the Christmas of 1986! The committee is asking for either monetary donations to buy decorations or actual decorations. Those interested in being part of the project are asked to contact McDonald at 522-4171.
