Middle's Lady Panthers Move Into First Place

The thrill of victory belonged to the lady Panthers of Middle Township last week as they knocked off the Cape Atlantic ; League (CAL) favorite, Wildwood, and took first place in division II. I Even though the Panther offense was running smoothly, the key to vie- ] tory was a 1-3-1 trapping i defense intended specifically for Wildwood's i Ann Turner and Franni , Barcas. Barcas and Turner, who ' each average 13 points per < game, were held to 11 and i eight respectively. Middle owned a 37-28 ad- | vantage going into the fourth round but allowed < the Warriors to close it to « ' 37-33. J WEAKNESS ON the Warrior foul stripe con- < tinued to give the ball back to the Panthers j Panthers Bev Grant and \ Michelle Greenwalt picked c

off passes and converted them into Middle points. Greenwalt. the only Panther freshman, finished the game . like a four year player and accounted for seven of Middle's last nine points. Grant paced Middle with 15 while Cori Osborne and Gilbert dominated the boards. The win boosts Middle's record to 7-1 in the conference. Earlier in the week, Wildwood girls stepped on Sacred Heart for a 52-34 victory. Ann Turner led the Warriors with 13 counters. Franni Barcas straightened the nets in the second period with 10 points. IN BOYS BASKETBALL the big story was a drop to second place for the Middle Township Panthers. St. Augustine dominated the boards and the baskets enough to survive a 23 tur-

nover performance. The Panthers came out strong as Mike Watkins, Maurice Hubbard and Eddie Bryan lit up the first six points before St. Augustine had time to think. But as soon as the Hermits got involved, they took over and left Middle trailing the rest of the game. It was 13-10 at the end of the first stanza and 26-24 at the end of the first half. Middle forced turnovers but failed to convert them and the Hermits pulled ahead as time ticked away. John Maggioncalda gave the Hermits a 44-34 advantage with 6:50 remaining.

Chris Thompson netted seven in the final quarter for the winners. LOWER CAPE MAY BOYS didn't have much more success than the Caper girls as they fell twice last week.
